Fozzy - I would agree, however my secondary education was at one of the best state schools in the country, it is however a grammar school. Would I have got the same exam results at a non selective state school? Almost certainly not.

The teaching was fantastic and the exam pedigree developed was legendary / comparable and indeed ahead of all the local private schools. Which is probably why a very famous labour MP sent her son there despite the fact he resided in a different borough and her party were against selective education, but who wouldn’t want the best for their kids?the son was enrolled under their fathers name, not the cabinet member’s surname.

I think "abolish private schools" is the kind of naive pointless policy that makes my inner middle aged cynic roll her eyes and stop listening. It doesn't matter what I think about equality people's drive to do the best for their own kids will always win. It's a pointless debate.

I have zero faith that such a blanket policy would solve inequality - the wealthy will find a way to seek the best chance for their kids. Be that private tuition, sending kids overseas to study or simply playing the game of state school admission rules to get their kids to the best one.

I'd be very interested in how they could help my two state educated kids be in a fantastic school by improving standards across the board though.

I think it's all about perception. Like MrsS I'm also old enough to have lived through the Thatcher years but I don't feel depressed, maybe it's because when you've always been just treading water it doesn't matter which party are in charge as they are all pretty useless to you.

£ surge against many currencies on tonight's election news. So not all view this as disaster many on this forum do.

Realise that most of the other posters are now asleep and that I should be too...

But trend seems to be - If Thatcher f@@ked your constituency you now vote Tory. It’s remarkable. Holding all the inner city seats with higher majorities may not hold back the tide against whats happening outside the cities.

Is Jon Lansman’s hair holding up worse than Labour’s traditional vote?

Perhaps the key question of the night

Lansman is barking mad and utterly deluded. Incredible.
