This is a historic problem for either side PH. If the other side moves to a more extreme position and it plays well (in this case Tories becoming very right wing) then the other parties tend to move further right to try to strip their moderate supporters. In that way even if they lose that election they've pulled the political discourse in their direction. When Labour became New Labour and took up a centrist position it did have success against the Tories for a while but look where we are now. I'm not sure a more moderate opposition to the Tory programme is really a worthwhile bargain to strike.

Add to yesterday's blogging....

I am grateful for a moderator who removed it and saved me mental effort of reading it and probably the minor increase in blood pressure.

Thank you Fetch!

Gobi
So for the first time in my life I have considered voting.

Listened to everyone on all side and for the first time in my life I got very close.

However , everything and nearly everyone seems to be clouded by hate or dislike of party leaders and Brexit.

My local MP is a Tory and I am told a very good local MP but I feel uncomfortable voting for him.

With this I announce now that I shall be living with the consequences and not voting.

Nobody can claim that I supported anything.

Boris is without a doubt a Twat with so many personal issues it hurts me that he may be my Prime minister.

Corbin and Labour have their issues as well. I dont want to live in the 1970s so no way will I support a labour candidate.

This really only left the Liberals and frankly last election in my area he lost his deposit.

If anyone wants me I'm probably working on a project dealing with the consequences of Brexit in my profession.

Gobi, wouldn't you even consider voting e.g. Green if it meets your values or Lib Dem (even if they can't get in, with our daft, constituency member system, at least it's registered where your values lie)?

I can't imagine not voting.

I can certainly understand people in safe seats not bothering, the system makes our votes effectively worthless. On the other hand, ticking your favoured party over from X to X+1% (and adding to their national vote tally) has to be worth a little in terms of perception. And I'd find it hard to sympathise with anyone who complains about the outcome but couldn't even be bothered voting.

The thing is, Gobi has articulated a very good argument for not voting. Perfectly reasonable. The problem is, Gobi's considered choice to not vote will be lumped in, statistically, with all those who just couldn't be a*sed or didn't understand etc. I'd just hate to see turnout figures down below 70%. It's interpreted as people not caring. And that is very sad.
