HappyG - It's true.

Here's the full apology on the Leeds NHS web site:

leedsth.nhs.uk

Here's the original story from the local paper:

yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk

Also noted that the Telegraph journalist sources were from Great Ormond St, several hundred miles away- here's her Twitter comment:

"He was not “forced to lie on a pile of coats”. The parents staged it. A Great Ormond St nurse has explained to me in detail how it is “100% faked”. That poor child used as a political pawn!"

The Great Ormond St nurse tweet looks to have originated from a sock puppet account.

The one slightly "contentious" point was that I think the child chose to lie on the floor, rather than on a chair. But still if anyone thinks that's a "get out of jail" card or think that Johnson's response to it was in anyway human or empathetic, then I suggest they check themselves for a pulse or other evidence of a heart.

Not on twitter so can’t view the posts.

But it would seem a bunch of liars are going to be elected to rule this country if the opinion polls are correct. I wouldn’t be surprised all these debunking of the boy on the floor was started by these very same liars.

Also Sky's former Times journo has just retweeted from a university professor a comprehensive debunking of the "it's a fake/it's posed" arguments

twitter.com

"Take a moment to read this thread about the spread of fake news - then read

@marcowenjones

other thread about the role of journalists.

It’s sobering stuff.

Once an incorrect idea is out there, it gets a life of its own. Deleting tweets doesn’t stem the tide"

Lot of good material including diagrams showing the proliferation of information (whether false or true) across social media.

Once you spend a few mins looking into it, it is overwhelmingly clear that the "my friend of a friend is a nurse in Leeds hospital" stuff is pure fake bollocks. Repeated near-verbatim posts from minor anonymous accounts on massive scale, all of which get the name of the hospital wrong...

The problem is though that *most* people don't do their own fact checking. So they see something, and either instinctively believe it to be true or not. The reality of fake news being a "thing" means no-one needs to trust what they read in the papers or see online. They just get to choose what they treat as a fact based on their own preconceptions.

So anyone minded to believe that the story about the boy was just electioneering by the Labour party will do so, irrespective of the veracity of the sources.

The politicians, led by Trump to a degree, are now free to state whatever they want and their acolytes will treat it as factual. And I fear that applies in varying degrees to both main parties in the UK at the moment; exaggeration for political impact was always present, but it feels like we've gone way beyond that now.

In the spirit of "fake news", some wag has posted on our local facebook group

"I was torn between voting Conservative and Brexit Party, but have just realised you can vote for both, so I'll be ticking both boxes on Thursday"
