I doubt the 800,000 BT shareholders will agree, Chrisull, and the Tories will make hay with this policy announcement. Personally I think some "re-nationalisation" is definitely worth a go (railways for example) but spending kazillions on re-nationalising telecoms, power and water seems to me to be a colossal waste of money when it could be spent rectifying some of the injustices which blight the land. It appears Corbyn is going shit or bust for state control of utilities. I doubt it will be a big vote winner, but time will tell. |

I’m generally in favour o& nationalising utilities but I am old enough to remember the six month wait for a phone to be installed...

Things are looking pretty grim for Labour at the moment.

Yeah I'm not a massive fan of renationalising of the energy companies, and even the railways for all franchises. They should simply take back the failed franchises(and currently done), turn them around, but not give them back (which has been a total disaster). It does look bleak for Labour. Although the aggregation of all polls: twitter.com shows Labour up 3.5 (Tories up 1.5) for the first 2 and a half weeks of the campaign which if they do for another 3 weeks will see a hung Parliament. But Swinson now saying no coalition/simply call for another general election, means no point in tactical voting anymore. And the three most recent polls show the Tories at over 40%, which is an easy majority. But what will be, will be. The Tories need to own this Brexit mess and let it obliterate them, and Labour need to jettison Corbyn. Both of these can only come to pass after a Johnson win and majority I suspect. |

I'm left wondering how it is that shareholder benefit trumps public service delivery. If a privatised public utility/service can't deliver effectively then it deserves to be taken back into public ownership - end of. That said I'm not convinced that the case has been made for re nationalising public utilities per se. I see the Tories and Lib Dems are vying to be the ones to promise to plant the most trees. As someone who plants trees as a pert of my job this is arse about face. Stop cutting down mature and ancient woodland would be a good place to start. An undertaking to put a moratorium on tree clearance for housing development or road building would get my vote. |

Pert? Or perk rather than part? (of your job ... not anything else)

run free
There was a feature some years ago of rural areas around the UK having installed their own cables and apparently have much faster upload and download speeds. bbc.com It would be exciting if folk took some sort of ownership to make it available nationwide. As for making it free, that too would be pretty exciting. It's already free at Heathrow, in the trains (although it is pretty bad connection), in coffee shops, some shopping malls... and though pay for it, can pick up wifi via mobile pretty much anywhere except in the mountains and some other wilderness areas which am happy about. |

Don't believe the polls. The public are far smarter than we give them credit for, as evidenced by the posters on this thread. The socialist wet dream is still alive. Don't give up comrades. |

Stander - I suspect not even Corbyn/Milne et al believe this. The manifesto is one last hurrah/blow out before oblivion of the ballot box, and the ignominy of resignation and the ensuing leadership battle which should see the end of Mccluskey/Milne/Murphy and Murray stranglehold on the party.
