Ah hang on, that's Irish citizens who are *resident* in UK. That makes more sense. I thought the whole of the adult population of Republic of Ireland could vote in UK general elections! :-O D'oh!

However, the bit I'm surprised about is that people who are resident in the UK but are not "... British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizens ... " can NOT vote in the UK. So all the other non UK nationals falling outside above can't vote in a GE? Wtf?! How did I not know this? That's terrible, isn't it?

Is that same in other countries? You have to be resident AND be a citizen to vote for national elections?

That's true, HappyG. Local and EU but not GE.

Ex-pats (of the UK) can't vote either after a certain period. So they are effectively disenfranchised unless they become citizens of their adopted country.

79 was my first G.E. after graduating, so I voted against Thatcher. I was living in the constituency with the biggest con margin at the time iirc (Cambridgeshire South I think it was called, and Eldon Griffith was the MP). A vote for any other party was wasted ☹️☹️

Oh, I suppose, yeah, they can still vote in their "home" country. Therefore if you want to vote for national gov't (with international law making and executive powers) then become a citizen of your country of residence. Hmm, yeah, fair enough. Still weird that Irish citizens qualify though. Is that just left over from Irish independence?

My wife found out that she is automatically an Irish citizen by virtue of her mum having been born there. She gets the passport with just some paperwork and a fee.....

Times have changed, macca53, South Cambs now has a Lib Dem council. I would have expected Heidi Allen to have retained her seat if he she hadn't opted not to stand due to the amount of threats and abuse from Brexiteers she's had.
