Fozzy, sending the letter and not leaving on the 31st are very different things.
Getting an Eu buddy to veto extension being one example of Bojo following the Benn act but us still leaving.

:) G Would be great if all remainers and leavers could open their minds to evidence based information rather than letting politicians play on our emotions of "hope", "want" and thus then moves onto "ego". Now they are attempting "fear" in the US. This is exactly what the US politicians / media / corporates (all are tied in together) have used in the past and now - to deflect what is really happening. What is democracy really?

Just a prediction here - if "no deal" Brexit is stopped / we do not exit on the 31st Oct, there will be people incited / paid to break windows or something and the media will focus on the small numbers that will do this and make it seem larger than it is. Fear is a control mechanism that works in the US. The media seems to be going along with promoting fear for the Tories.

We could simply leave unilaterally on 31st. Even if the EU agree to extend.

I've always thought it possible that BJ might just bluster his way through and take us out anyway. I doubt there's much that could stop that provided he signs the letter.

FR - not if parl accepts the extension. But yes, if parl voted to accept No deal, we could just leave on 31st.

Simbil, I have faith in the EU's ability to control its members to come to a sensible, shared view for the benefit of all. So even trying to get the Hungarian PM to veto shouldn't be likely.

However, FR's suggestion - he signs the letter, then sends another letter saying "I *asked* for an extension, but now I'm *telling* you, we're leaving anyway." or some such nonsense - I wouldn't put that past Johnson, Cummings et al.

The second letter ruse would simply be ignored, the commentators are quite clear on that.

But that would be acting to frustrate the Benn act which Jo Maugham is currently tweeting would have serious personal consequences for Johnson.

Yes, correct Stu, it might even land him in jail. I'm hoping he tries it...

Run free - you might be right, I hope not. Civil unrest and rioting are terrifying. And whipping up that sentiment is unforgivable. I really feel for the MPs who are getting threats against them, which is another symptom of the antagonistic rhetoric. :-(

What kind of weird doublespeak is this from Brandon Lewis in reaction to Johnson saying to the court that he would have to send the extension letter if no agreement by 19 Oct:

news.sky.com

"... Home Office Minister Brandon Lewis told Sky News: "We will follow the rule of law. We will abide by the law as we have said consistently. But we are going to leave on 31 October.

"I appreciate the follow up question to that is how do you do it.

"I am afraid as there is so many people, some in parliament as well, who seem determined to do all they can to frustrate Brexit, we are not going to tell them right now exactly what our plans are.

"That's giving the other side your plans I'm not sure is not a smart thing to do, particularly when at the moment our key focus is doing it the right way, which is getting a deal."
