We had to ask for hush at our cross country meet on Sunday so the brief pre-race announcements could be made.

Briefings I can never hear them at the moment as I stand far back from the crowd and too many folk “chatting”. I'm usually standing there too UC and I don't hear them either, even with their PA system! |

I've never done a race where there hasn't been the need to ask for people to quieten down. Its not all "lack of manners" or similar, sometimes people genuinely don't realise or can't hear or as is now the case at many parkruns, the whining and barking dogs making everything unintelligible. Its another reason for having snappy briefings. |

Totally agree on the sentiment about dogs at parkrun. They're a big enough noise nuisance issue in society in general but that's another issue.

I guess it’s like the safety briefing on a plane. You might have heard it all before but the person in the next row maybe hasn’t so have some manners and stop talking so they can hear. Plus there might be a safety issue that week that wasn’t there last time you ran. The current advice is to have the briefing scripted and stick to the script so that you’re not tempted to ramble too long. That’s advice that should remain in place even when the rest of the Covid framework isn’t needed, IMHO. |

please don't take part if you aren't medically fit to do so because I hate filling in forms I have a similar approach. It's probably a bit too flippant and/or takes too long for the people that only want to turn up and race a social run in a park. |

The Nostell RD (if it's the same one) on NYD in 2019 was brilliant at getting everyone's attention.

Comparison to the plane safety talks is a bit of a false equivalency. Risk is much lower. As is the severity of such risks. Albeit with slightly higher likelihoods of happening. And most parkrun briefings aren't about safety anyway. They're telling me that it's Jenny's 43rd parkrun and she'll be running backwards to celebrate. But by all means do safety stuff. As someone who is v keen on appropriate and proportionate health and safety requirements, I'm all in favour of warning people about potholes or not to fall into the lake (or perhaps more likely getting tripped up by a 1.5m long dog lead). Just bin the happy clappy nonsense for me. |
