I wasnt expecting them to, more suggesting a way the current ones with permission could resume and do what they can to avoid being overwhelmed

Pre-registration might get a free 5km running event back, it won't be parkrun though.
And by that I mean both interpretations of that sentence. It won't be the existing parkrun (the organisation) doing it, and also if the parkrun organisation for some reason did do it, it would no longer be parkrun (the event).

would you rather have something a bit like parkrun or have no parkrun at all?

I'd be happy to run any event where someone says "bang" and someone else presses a stop watch at the end after I've done a bit of running.
But I wouldn't make the claim that something that wasn't parkrun (the individual events) was something it wasn't. If I'm turning up to a 5km race and paying the equivalent of £3 for each of a series of races then I'll expect different things from if I'm paying £20+ for a "Great" race which happens to be 5km long (I wouldn't pay that), and different things again from a free 5km'ish event that is essentially a local village fete event and just requires you to bake a cake for entry. None of them are parkrun though, although you have to register in advance.
I think the thing that parkrun provides is worth saving. It's not the same as other 5km races, and it's not the same as your mate standing on the side of the field with a stop watch. It does provide different things from both extremes of ways of "racing" a 5km and I think that parkrun HQ are right to protect that from being diluted in anyway.
So I'd be happy with something like parkrun...but only as long as parkrun doesn't become that "something like parkrun".

I think we first need to understand if the registration thing *is* an issue. There's nothing out there to my knowledge that demonstrates that registration is even an issue for landowners.
I'd be happy to have to sign up the night before, and it would still be parkrun to me. But I suppose I'd be less happy if I tried to sign up the night before and was told "sorry, full".

But... what is parkrun?
For many it is an opportunity to run and socialise.
This participating all have their own personal reasons and interpretation of what it is to them. Having a closed mind to any option that differs from one individuals opinion of what parkrun is has not got anywhere. A little temporary tweaking over the past few months just might have helped those desperate for its return.

It's probably too late to make changes like pre-registration, though it might have been enough to enable an end of March restart.
I do hope no landowners have read this sentence from the Framework as meaning 'per event/date' "All participants are required to register online and in advance of their attendance, and also do not need to collect any items (such as race numbers) in order to participate."

The have tweaked things in how parkruns operate. They brought forward the switch to app only, which was only going to be for new events until hardware went kaput. They have changed the guidelines on briefings. They have allowed events to adjust their start and finish points to make them quite a bit longer than 5km. They have increased the number of marshals required. Told events to look more closely at finish areas and extend funnels. Told them to potentially move where briefings happen so that people can be spaced out during that. Made more emphasis on people lining up in approximate pace order at the start to ease congestion... And a few other things I can't remember of the top of my head.
Why is the pre-registration such a sticking point for the tweak that this forum is looking for. There is a lot of EDs / RDs here, do you not also see the nightmares and friction it would cause you and the volunteers when people find their results getting deleted or told they can't run this week?

"They have increased the number of marshals required"
30 volunteers on a 3 lap course with 300 runners? When everyone wants to run?
The same ratio of helpers to participants as a primary school field trip?
Yep, that's a positive move.

Spiedeog, it has been said that parkrun cannot return unless the majority of events have the go ahead and right now we are some way short of that. As a result the chances are that due to the risk of un-manageable numbers, no parkruns can start.
I am suggesting that a pre registration and asking Parkrunners to understand why these are in place and respect them could offer a route to getting some parkruns started while arrangements for the others are sorted.
I dont get why there is such a resistance to considering some tweaks to help get back just because its not parkrun. lets be honest, footballs been back for a long time but its not football without the crowds.
