In my email to HQ I asked to be pointed towards any study showing that volunteering was as beneficial physically as walking, jogging or running. The reply was, basically, 'it's what we think.' Tom referred to his first and postgrad degrees in the sports science field, so if any such research existed he'd know and would specifically mention it, you'd have thought.

I suppose volunteering could be a first step to participating so there is that angle.
For me though I volunteer because I know volunteers are required or the events cant run and so I am giving my bit back to ensure I continue to have a parkrun. I dont enjoy or get any benefit from volunteering other than knowing it helps the event to run

I apologise to anyone who I've lapped or if I've been first finisher pushing the buggy at their parkrun.

Same here Bazoaxe. I am alternating between running and volunteering; I enjoy doing both.

I like both at the same time as I need to exercise. So this week I have volunteered as a pacer. So my volunteering will definitely be beneficial..

I quite like being lapped. Usually it doesn’t happen as I'm in the top 20 running and at Woodley you only get lapped if you are over about 24 mins. This week I ran with a friend and it was great to see all the people who usually beat me (and I never see running apart from the first 10secs as they leave me for dust) speeding past me, breathing hard.

@larkim I get the anxiety thing, as someone who stammers I've had my fair share of anxiety in certain speaking situations.
I just find it hard to see the anxiety in doing something through choice, unless you or others were saying she really should try it given she was a 30 minute 5k runner?
Can't think of any people I know who've tried it and not been back (which probably accounts for the rising numbers of participants).

Regarding the lapping thing, I just think of it as having a grip on what is important in life and not taking myself terribly seriously

I judge how fast I'm running by the point at which one of the core team laps me

57.5Dop - I think I scanned your barcode on Saturday at Inverness. I clocked your name and thought it looked familiar, and it clicked as you walked away.
