Anyone here do Great Run Local? Is it like Parkrun but on a Sunday? Problem for me is the nearest one is 120 miles away...

From what I can see on the website it's any day of the week (and any time) and not necessarily a weekly event. I can see one has a next event of 20th May for example.

There’s none anywhere near me or I would consider it!

I had one close to me but it looks like they've given up a couple of weeks ago. Probably wasn't enough competition for parkrun.

I'd be suspicious of the motives of anything involved with "Great Run"

I did a Great Run local at Southwold a few years ago. It was fine, though a tiny field of about 25-30 people. Latest results show it hasn't grown at all. Bizarrely given it was an out and back course where they could very easily have made it exactly 5k it was instead a 3 mile course. I couldn't see how the 'tapping your wristband on the timekeeper's phone' could be scaled up to the numbers many parkruns get as the time taken to tap in would lead to a queue on the finish line. I don't even know if my wristband would still work.

Quite a few round Manchester. Done a couple, similar setup except a range of days and times.

Agree on the wristband, not scalable.

Bob!
surely if the numbers were to rise, you'd just have more timekeepers with phones

Just shows what a good job parkrun UK have done - with the organisation (!) of Great Run behind it, you'd have thought the Local events would be able to trounce parkrun. But they have no clear USP - pick a time, pick a distance, pay for a wristband etc all barriers to the success that parkun has had.

You might imagine that the thinking goes something along the lines of "Bloody parkrun with their events that don't cost £95, let's give some of the free action hoping we steer them towards our pay for events"
