That's funny Jenny, I think I would be the same. Ours is a three lapper and people have trouble keeping count of those.

I put my name down to volunteer this weekend and said I wasn't bothered which role.
Ive been allocated timekeeper which I am now very nervous about as it seems quite responsible and room for me to make a Horlicks of things

You'll be alright Bazo. If you get a tump of runners coming at you, just concentrate on clicking the right number of times, rather than trying to time each click accurately to the finish line. If they're that close, they'll all be within a second of each other, and no-one complains about being 1s out. In fact, even if they do complain, remember that you've volunteered, and they haven't.

Timekeeper is the only job I've ever done - though as they use two stopwatches (I presume that's common at most parkruns) one person's effort ends up being totally redundant!
You'll be fine Baz!

Merry Christmas & Happy New G(rrr)
I got one wrong once as time keeper. Dad, buggy, kid (4 or 5?) I clicked once for dad, thought, no for baby in buggy obv and thought that kid had just tagged on with Dad too. Turned out kid had done whole 5K and had her own barcode. So everyone was out by one behind. Easy enough to fix by just adding in one extra time at same time as Dad. But still a bit nerve wracking anyway. Usually two timekeepers now so there's a back up. G

My fellow time keeper did once press "reset" (or some other button) when they set off and didn't realise until about 10 minutes in - we then had to quickly synchronise his watch with mine so that he was recording me minus 13 minutes precisely or something similar so that we still had a backup of sorts!

Bazo, you might want gloves as its hard in the cold, but make sure you can operate a button without slipping! If you think you have made a mistake then check if you have the same amount of clicks as the other timer. If you haven't, remember the runner count where you think the mistake was made and then its easier to fix it afterwards.

Timing is like most of parkrun: very easy but if it goes wrong then tricky to sort out. We once had someone press the wrong button for each runner - so instead of the lap button she pressed the stop/start button again. Luckily I wasn't RD that day! Any other minor discrepancies are no problem to fix.
Oh and what Fetch said - look ahead a bit and if you see a bunch of runners just click that many times, rather than the precise split second they enter the funnel. And it's useful for someone to check timer & token numbers every so often; I usually do that myself if I'm RD but some runs have a funnel manager.

Everyone was very nice at Highbury - they gave me a shout out in the pre run brief as I was celebrating my 10th year parkrun anniversary. I did wonder whether everyone dashed off post run as it was so cold - maybe they just went straight home to defrost? I like Highbury Fields course. It's tougher than it first looks as you have to do the incline 6 times but I do like the downhill bit on the other side as it's good recovery. I always feel its a bit like doing a hill rep session just without the recoveries between sets!
