Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

There's a race series that runs through the winter here - 10Ks - although at least two of them were way short last year. Anyway, they are inexplicably popular. This year, they are adding a 5k option for each event - but at the same price you'd pay for the 10k.

Not a chance.

I'd never run a 5K before starting parkrun, just a half marathon and three 10Ks. When I started parkrun I couldn't see the point of ever paying for a 5K, but now I've done half a dozen.

There are 2, maybe 3 5k races, that I pay for each year tops - but none that charge anywhere near £20. Small, community organised events for a few quid.

My local parkrun (Delamere) is definitely not a super fast course, so I've paid for three 5ks in the last couple of years - mainly to use them as a "focus" event knowing that the calibre of other runners turning up will be very high, so hoping to be able to get dragged to a good time. Running sub-20 (just!) at Delamere will usually see you in the top 10-15, and much of that might be on your own. So for me its sometimes worth it just to get a deeper competition field.

But saying that, I would only do them if they were fairly local and reasonable value. £7 for Christleton (high quality, a little further away but fast course) and £9.50 for Mid Cheshire (very local, 3.5 miles from home). For a speed-challenge once or twice per year I can justify that sort of layout. But parkrun must have kyboshed many a fee-paying 5k for "mass participation" by now.

When I ran down in Cirencester there were two great 5ks, one up North of Gloucester, £2, one per month May, June, July, August, first prize for each age group was 3 packets of biscuits (of your choice from a big box), second prized, 2 packs, third prized 1 pack, and team prizes too.

If a club went mob-handed it was biscuit heaven.

Limited to 100.....

Also Astec West a flat 5k around an industrial estate on the ege of Bristol..cheap as chips.

This £20 5k at home will get loads of entries because many of the medal collectors will believe it is good value. Gimmicky races attract large numbers despite the high entry fee.

I much prefer the industrial estate, cheap races, with no gimmicks, no medals, maybe a cup of tap water.

I pay for the Cardiff SSAFA 5K series £6 per race partly to support the cause but mainly because summer evening races are what it is all about. Also pay £9 for Nos Galan because it makes New Year's Eve much more interesting than doing the standard rubbish.

Recently I have paid £15 as entry fee for the three race series that is the Joydens Wood 5k. It's a local off road run with a different route for each one of the series and organised by a local running club once a month on a Wednesday evening during the summer months. Spot prizes of wine or beer and a range of trophies at the end of the series.

In the City of London there is a 5k event organised by the London Marathon that I have once paid for entry but its more of a Corporate event.

To a certain extent this was the fear of many athletics clubs that parkrun would kill off these local events and actually I don't think it has.
