Brief follow up. Based on other recent papers, use of platelet lysate seems to be still under development so is probably not a current option.

@NZD thanks - all grist to the knee @Canute my wife has had a full knee replacement, which is a big step up from a partial knee replacement, and she diligently worked on her recovery programme afterwards. Took some months but recovery was good with no loss of function, although she has never been a runner! A side effect of several years of struggling with her knee was to impose additional stress on her hip on the same leg and eventually she was referred for a hip replacement. Whilst waiting for that op, her hip collapsed pitching her down one step, landed on her other knee ( the good one!!) fracturing the kneecap. The resultant trauma from that has been a long drawn out process of building up sufficient strength in that damaged knee and leg so that she could sustain weight on it in order to permit the hip replacement and then to undergo corrective surgery on the kneecap to remove metalwork and restore function, which is still ongoing 15 months after. the moral to that story is that instability in joints can lead to consequences! I don't know what exercises your physio has prescribed but discussion with my consultant and physio led to recommending the exercise recommended in particular in this article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6874930/#:~:text=SLAS%20exercise%3A%20patients%20stand%20with,they%20try%20to%20squat%20down. The PRP treatment seems to be most effective in early stage osteoarthritis and not so much, if at all, in Stage 4. |

Solo: What with missing the 10k yesterday and Cardiff half.I am loathe to even think about races there is a Santa 5k in December and a hilly 10 miler but will think about thing's. I may wait till Newport in April. TS: I hope Mrs TS is doing okay as been a tough time for you both the past two years.Enjoy your break away you both deserve it. My Achilles is stiff on getting out of bed,achy/painful when running but worse when I went for walk after lunch and only 30 minutes. It is getting easier when running.I know they flare up last 10 weeks then just disappear until the next time. Canute: I hope knee can manage with out a replacement until it is desperate. NZD: Sorry to hear about Covid for MIL people think it has gone away but it is still here lurking, I would have to stop running and that is not going to happen Just under six miles this morning the longest in weeks and weeks so happy with that hoping to build on it. PRP: not sure what to say! Two consultants are very confident that the injections contribute to healing but there really doesn't seem a way of knowing! Another run/walk, and not that it matters but today was probably a little quicker, perhaps because summer was here, also. 2, 2, 2, 3.5, 3.5 minutes, so a total of 13 with a minute or so between the two minute runs, and two between the "long" reps. Yes I thought summer was over but it seems to have made a return in the UK. Two glorious days in the North East. Hoping for more. My first swim today in a good few weeks. 2km at slow pace, felt great. Sorry about your Covid NZD |

Glad you are having a little summer doppelganger up north! Sounded like the real one was a bit disappointing. Nice progress @alehouse and @Welshpoppy. And ditto your swim, @OO61. Another interesting article TS. Likely my ignorance but it wasn't clear how their "Static Low-Angle Squat" differed from a normal squat? I didn't get off Scott-Free with my Sunday 'gardening' escapade. Seems my brute force attack on the largest of the tree roots (18 in dia.) caused an injury to my R shoulder or upper arm. Didn't notice it at the time but yesterday and today have had a lot of pain in my R triceps. Now starting to feel it in my forearm âšī¸. MIL has improved a bit though will still be in hospital a couple of more days. Had pneumonia on top of the covid but a combination of intravenous antibiotics and intravenous ritonavir seems to be working. |

@Welshpoppy I can understand that and you are one of those people who has great motivation without needing a race. Glad you are able to start building the mikes again. @Torque Steer hope you are having a nice break. Can I ask about your running history? I am curious about what distances you ran and your own personal achievements. I feel you are a mine of information and I am guessing if you were running 60 plus miles a week you did a few marathons? @NZD good to hear your MIL is improving. Your gardening project is definitely sounding a challenge for your body! Hope with a little rest your aches and pains disappear. @OO61 do you use swimming as x training? @alehouse all heading in the right direction by the sounds of it and there is no doubt a little bit of sunshine helps đ @Canute I think you have showed incredible patience thus far. Summer is still here but a bit breezy too on my run this afternoon. 2 x easy miles warm up, 2 x MP, 1 x HMP, 2 x easy miles, 2 x HMP. Average pace for HMP miles 7.30 exactly. At the end of my session I was rewarded with a new Garmin VO2 max of 56. I know it will have to stop improving soon! |

You are on the up solo. Another good sesh there. Yes I try to swim once or twice a week but took a break over the school hols. I'm pretty slow but 2k freestyle is a good workout with no impact on the joints. NZD that heavy duty gardening is really knocking you about. Grass cutting and secateurs isxanout my limit. 10 easy miles here in glorious sunshine. |

@Torque Steer I am sorry to hear about the series of problems that your wife suffered following an initial knee problem. I am aware that one consequence of using a walking stick in my left hand (to support the swinging leg while my troublesome right leg was on stance) for several months, I now have weak glut medius and am doing daily exercise to address this weakness. Thanks for the link to the paper about static low angle squats; I have recently re-introduced squats into my regime. It is pleasing to know that fairly deep static squats are likely to beneficial for my knee. Hitherto I have done dynamic squats, and I will now try the static version. Today I enjoyed the delightful blue sky during my jog/walk. For the time being I am continuing with repetitions of 3 min jog/ 1 min walk. @Welshpoppy it is good to hear that you are happily extending the distance of your runs. @alehouse that sounds like steady progress @Solo you are training well. @OO61 it is good to hear that you enjoyed the same weather as I did this AM, but I will defer any thoughts of a 10 mile session for the time being. @NZD I hope the shoulder injury resolves rapidly |

Hmm, thread seems to have come to a grinding halt! Alas no run since Sunday and now not likely at least until Sat. MIL improved a lot over 4 days in hospital (yes antibiotics and ritonavir but regular meals, meds, sleep/wake, and care also worked wonders). Unfortunately late last night OH tested positive, then early this morning hospital phoned her to say MIL (still covid positive) was being discharged early pm and needed to be picked up. Not moved by fact OH was only one in a position to do it and was unwell ("don't come in, we will bring your mother out to you"). Or that MIL is not managing at home by herself. OH now camped down in MIL's house to look after her mum while fighting off covid herself. OK here so far but have of course now been re-exposed (OH yesterday before testing positive) ... đ¤ Time will tell. |
