First three gigs were Rory Gallagher, Spooky Tooth and Ten Years After, all at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. First all day festival was at Wembley Stadium in 1974 (I think), opened by Stackridge and followed by Rufus, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Beach Boys and headlined by Elton John (who played the whole of Captain Fantastic snd the Brown Dirt Cowboys which had just been released). We had Mr Glitter at one of our Union Balls at uni; also saw the Police just as Roxanne was released and they cancelled the university tour they were doing and went into big halls. Biggest disappointment were the Average White Band who were very up themselves and did five minute solos in each song! Embarrassing pre-pubescent bands seen with my daughter: Boyzone, A1, 911 (all on the same bill).
The days of going into “town” to buy the latest album. Then opening it on the bus to read the sleeve notes etc and the smell of the new vinyl.
For me one of the things i also remember was the going to queue outside the sheffield city hall to get tickets for gigs when they came on sale.
For bands like iron maiden we would go to Rebels (rock/biker nightclub) first then to the city hall when rebels shut. Always wanted downstairs tickets so you could stand at the front. If you couldnt get a downstairs ticket it was a second tier ticket. The first two tiers shared the same bar so you would meet a mate who would have ticket stub and another mates (who was stood downstairs already) and you would use the second stub to get back into the downstairs section. Happy days 😁
Never been to a concert, I've seen a couple of local bands but probably because I was the support dj. Love all music from late 50's on but only listen to it in the car now.
Two groups I saw live early on that I'll never regret paying for are Tangerine Dream and Captain Beefheart. However, I deepy regret that my sister turned my TD t-shirt into a dishcloth!
