I have never been asked for proof of age. However, I am generally regarded as appearing younger than some work colleagues who are five years my junior.

I got carded on my last trip to the USA when buying alcohol.
Only cos it was the policy/law in that particular establishment though!

I have always said my mum at my age definitely looked older than me and I definitely couldn’t see her getting up for a 5 mile run at 5.30am . Also today I saw a woman in my work with the same year of birth as me and I’m no spring chicken but I don’t look as old as that.

I was able to pass for half fare into my early twenties, but becoming a junior hospital doctor soon whacked the youthfulness out of me. I think I look around my actual age now and certainly don't look younger than colleagues of a similar age. In her 80s, my mother still likes to brag about being taken for being younger than her age, or about people saying she can't possibly have a daughter of nearly XX years old. (She had me young, and rounds my age up to the next number ending in zero.)

There's a difference between looking our age and looking old. I think. Maybe I'm not expressing myself well. Once they got into their late 50s, the "old" men would sit in the park in their dark suits and bunnets, smoking and complaining about this or that. Smoking rates are down, people are more careful about what they eat and drink in spite of a reported obesity crisis. I think in general, people look younger and healthier for longer.
There are areas where life expectancy is much lower than the national average though and we can't ignore that.

Our friend's daughter qualified as a doctor last year and got married. She went to the pharmacy to get her dad some ibuprofen and was asked to prove her age. They were very surprised when she told them that she could actually write a prescription if necessary.

I didn't think earlier when I posted about the distinct lack of hard physical labour nowadays compared to 20 or 30 years ago which would also age people. There are far more automated jobs now and an awful lot less physical work.
