Actually, for all the legend, Joy Division were, as far as I can tell, four Manc lads who liked a bevvy. Which perhaps makes the records more extraordinary.
Dvorak, it is always surprising to read the many accounts of those around Ian Curtis who didn't see the lyrics as a window into his psyche. One assumes he was a very different personality than that hindsight ascribes to him.
This has always been one of my favourite Joy Division covers - feels like about half the tempo of the original and then kicks up a gear for the last 90 seconds of guitar.
On the working with people who were born after you started work thing. I worked for 22 years at the same place before "retiring" during which time it went from a small start-up to a big multi-national. Part of my role for the last couple of years was running the graduate/ student internship/ apprenticeship programs, which hired several hundred people per year, almost all of whom were born after I'd started work at the company. (And I was always impressed at just how smart/ well educated/ worldly/ hard working & motivated they all were compared to myself at the same age.)
He started with a motor company as an apprentice storeman at age 15 and the company has changed hands and franchises several times but he is still with them, working his way up through senior storeman, foreman and currently parts manager. He will be 67 next week
