That's the thing, Glenn - for yoga/gym/SUP/whatever it is. Cycling is driven by power if you have it or heart rate if you don't. Walking is driven by (running) threshold pace, which takes no account of terrain, inter alia. Running ditto, obvs.

Sorry, I'm a bit behind here - what does TSS stand for?

There are many different aspect do fitness, including aerobic capacity, muscle resilience and endurance, power generation capacity. For a distance runner, aerobic capacity is the factor that limits performance, assuming that the other aspects of fitness such as muscle resilience and endurance are adequate.

TSS (training stress stimulus) was devised as a measure of training load that is mainly focussed on aerobic capacity. It provides a reasonable estimate of the effects mid-aerobic training on aerobic capacity.

However, TSS is a poor measure of fitness benefits in several situation, In the case of high intensity interval training, it is a poor measure of the effect on aerobic capacity unless complex adjustments are made.

At the opposite end of the intensity scale, it does not reflect the training benefits for long duration low intensity session (e.g. long walks in hilly country). The benefits of these sessions on muscle resilience and endurance are poorly reflected in the TSS.

For a runner, if you do mainly aerobic ‘mid-zone’ running, I think recording TSS offers only slight advantage over recording weekly training mileage. Too much focus on TSS might encourage you to undervalue either HIT or long slow running.

If you run and cycle, TSS does prove a reasonable estimate of overall cardiovascular benefits of your training. But if you only do cycling training, do not expect your TSS data to predict you performance in a 10K run – your leg muscle resilience will be inadequate.

I knew what TSS was nerd

It's one of those training parameters I've never wanted enough to pay for because you can throw as many numbers at me as you like and I'll still use perceived effort and ODAAT for my training.

I'm now on a warm Spanish island and glad of having had a few weeks of good weather at home to acclimatise.

Just catching up re the conversation about HF walking holidays - I've been on a few guided holidays and will go again. Once I've arrived I can 'switch off' for the week - the only decisions I need to make are what walk I want to do (easier, medium, harder), what I want in my packed lunch, what I want to eat for my dinner and what I want to drink! .. HF do the rest including transport at the start and end of the walk. People are sociable (if you want to be sociable yourself) and there's generally a good mix of couples & singletons. And the 'organised jollity' has been done away with - those that want it (presumably the 'older' customers who hanker after things being the way they used to be) can book themselves on a 'Classic' HF walking holiday.

We had optional organised jolity, and we (mid-fifties) were right at the young end of the age range. The bar shut at 20:30 too, which was fine with us. :)
