This discussion has taken a turn that puts me in mind of the "most overrated band/artist" thread on here

On a similar theme, is there any sport that people think they could train for for 4 years solidly and medal, qualify, etc, in LA? Seriously? It was a question on YouGov this week, with various sports / events. I didn't read any of the specific events because I just voted no for every single one. I'm intrigued to see if YouGov release the answers for this one. It reminded me of the "what animal would you beat in a fight" survey. |

No, there's not one I could do for 4 years and make it to qualify let alone win. I don't think there would have been if I'd started at 18 rather than now when I'm 54. I bet there's a lot of sofa dwellers who think they could, though. Oh, and I think I could take a duck but only if it was already tired from a long quack. |

I've long since given up on athletics, lol. Given I do track, I have a pretty clear idea how long I can last at various paces.

I was told, at about age 12, that after one session I went to with a well known (but not 'top tier') athletics club that I wasn't fast enough to run for them Obviously I did not go back |

If only a talent scout had come to my small town youth club when I was in my teens and told me that there was a living to be made from sticking in at my table tennis instead of jacking it in to go to medical school, I might have made it into the first ever Olympic table tennis competition. I'd have been the right age. Actually, no, not even then. Insufficient talent accompanied by unsuitable attitude. |

@paulcook I think the inverse is also an interesting question - what sports exist that those who are elite at another sport could not reach elite level over a few years. For instance in cycling, a lot of the current top riders reached national level in football, swimming, running, skiing, skating or other disciplines before making the switch. They're seemingly free to pick what they want and will excel. Are there sports for which this doesn't apply, and for which those in vaguely related disciplines couldn't switch to make the top? |

One of the Scandi Triathletes (name escaping me at the mo) is apparently switching to just cycling after the olympics and reckons he's going to win the Tour de France in 5 years. It will be interesting to see if he can. No it won't, actually. He's got no chance. He'll do well to make it as a pro at World Tour level, let alone to win anything. |
