Nellers
There's quite a few who have switched between rowing and cycling in the British talent scouting process. Rebecca Romero was a World Champion on the regatta lake before switching to the pursuit and winning Olympic and World golds.

MudMeanderer wrote:@paulcook I think the inverse is also an interesting question - what sports exist that those who are elite at another sport could not reach elite level over a few years. For instance in cycling, a lot of the current top riders reached national level in football, swimming, running, skiing, skating or other disciplines before making the switch. They're seemingly free to pick what they want and will excel. Are there sports for which this doesn't apply, and for which those in vaguely related disciplines couldn't switch to make the top?

When I did football coaching, I had heard of top club scouts who watched tennis for those who had the athletic, hand-ball, etc attributes. Some, many perhaps, of the skills are certainly interchangeable.

That's Blumenfelt (sp?). He could end up like Wurf was - stuck on the front doing a pacing job for hours, but not the classic build for the high mountains.

I want to look into that one Nellers. I fear he may have been misquoted. It was Kristian Blummenfelt who won Olympic gold, the 70.3 World Champs and Ironman World champs all within a 12 month period, so the man is an athlete.

He may have just said I would love to ride the Tour de France one day. The quotes I have just found are all from his coach and are big talk. There is no way he wins the Tour de France, I'm not sure he has much better than a 10% chance of making a squad on the Tour de France, but let the man try.

In terms of watching the Olympics and saying that is rubbish, we can all do that, despite being rubbish ourselves. Same for football etc. We can also be correct in that, it was rubbish relative to their peers. You fall on your face in the divinig or come off your skateboard, that isn't going down well with the judges.

In terms of the showoffs who can just jump between sports. We had Rebecca Romero who medalled in cycling and rowing. I must do a blog on these super freaks at some point.

Max Woosnam, though he only medalled in one Olympic sport - tennis. Played a host of other sports at different levels, including golf, snooker, football and cricket.

In the 1920s, though. If you had the money you could do whatever you liked back then. ;-)

Remco represented Belgium in football at U15.

Michael Woods (one of the best climbers out there for short climbs) until recently held the Canadian 1500m running record.

The (now slightly clichéd) description of Grand Tour winner Primoz Roglic is as former ski jumper, where he was at the top as a junior.

Anna Henderson (silver TT) was a slalom skiier.

There are a lot who do that switch I to elite cycling from quite a few directions.

paulcook wrote:On a similar theme, is there any sport that people think they could train for for 4 years solidly and medal, qualify, etc, in LA? Seriously? It was a question on YouGov this week, with various sports / events. I didn't read any of the specific events because I just voted no for every single one. I'm intrigued to see if YouGov release the answers for this one. It reminded me of the "what animal would you beat in a fight" survey.

No, obviously not at this age and given the general strength of the UK team. Scratch that, not at any age, I did train hard for a while when a student (alongside some internationals) and found my limits.

But there are a load of sports where I'd be much more competitive than Eric was.

About This Thread

Couldn't find a thread so thought I would start one.

Who else is off to watch or who is watching at home?

We're doing Lille and Paris and a mix of sports. Currently trying to find travel insurance that includes ticket cancellation as some of the trains in the UK might be difficult and we have some internal French trains to do as well.

Also need to work out the new Paris metro ticket/app combo (Navigo I think).
