Myth of the 20-mile long run

Interesting debate, I have only just noticed this thread, ironically I have a 20 mile marathon training run scheduled for tomorrow....

London marathon was hard, not because of the heat, but because of my lack of 20 mile runs. Fact! :-) G

I did two 20 mile runs - they both took me about 3hrs45ish - so on the cusp of being 'too long'. I am glad I had them 'in my legs' on Sunday as I genuinely found I felt strong, although when I ran them I found them very hard mentally. I wouldn't run any further than that in raining unless my long run speed had picked up a bit - I do think that time on feet was probably enough.

If it makes you feel better G, I had a torrid time in London, and I’d done 4 20s and a 22! :-)

I do think it was the heat that made it so horrible (and slow, for me - a massive PW and way off the 3:50-ish I was targeting). Who knows though?

MrJ is doing his first mara on Sunday - he’s done two 20s, both of which have taken a bit over 4 hours, but psychologically he didn’t want to have only done 18 (or even less) in training.

There is a boost to getting 20+ miles under the belt. I did one about 6 weeks before the marathon by mistake (I got lost) and I think lots of 10 miles mixed with some track after would've done me pretty well and better than doing it too close to the end. The long runs can result in more shuffling and more risk of injury through insufficient recovery

This is the first marathon I've really enjoyed training for - I was really relieved it held me in good stead and I'm pretty certain on a better day there's a pb in me now

I think that’s what Mr J has found - both the longer runs and the recovery have somewhat affected his running style, so he has had to have longer to recover after some of the longer runs than he’d anticipated - but on the flip side he’s needed the psychological boost to give him the confidence that he can do it.

Good to hear Serendippily - I think enjoying the training is half the battle! Just had a quick nosy at your time, and to be less than 15 minutes of your best time in that heat definitely suggests there’s a PB there in better conditions! :-)

I'd got to 22 for my longest training run for a marathon tbh, although tbf I'm very much a novice at the distance.

I think if you were well trained and going for an optimum time, the heat on Sunday would have been a real hindrance. But for me, it was def my lack of training that was the bigger factor, rather than the weather.

That's a good point that for newer runners, the first 20 milers can actually mess up your training plan. I often say that the best way to do a good marathon is to have done a bad one before it (months before, not weeks or days!)! :-) G
