I’m now using enviromesh on my brassicas, not cheap but I hope I lasts a good few years. It’s a fine weave so nothing would be able to get stuck in it.

I was going dig a trench along it's length, line the bottom with chalk, and plant vines, probably Muller Thurgau and a chnace Pinto Noir. There is no chnace of that up in Manchester, and no decent south facing wall either.
Non-runner Apr 2020 1:31pm, 3 Apr 2020 388 posts	0 Non-runner Agree D2, I stopped using netting for the same reason, even though it wasn’t cheap and quite elastic, it still took ages to free the poor thing. I don’t want to totally cover the bed with an opaque closed mesh either for aesthetic reasons. What the heck, I might just grow some cabbages anyway and let the cabbage whites run riot, treat it as a wildlife patch😊.
jacdaw Apr 2020 3:08pm, 3 Apr 2020 2,925 posts	0 jacdaw I net cabbages with stuff that looks like net curtain, rather than open net. Much more difficult to tangle up in. Without it the woodpigeons and caterpillars would strip the plants. Instead, the slugs eat them...
Fragile Do Not Bend Apr 2020 3:59pm, 3 Apr 2020 5,676 posts	0 Fragile Do Not Bend Over my strawberries I have a quite stiff mesh that I’ve stretched taut over a frame and attached the net to the frame. I’m pretty sure birds won’t get tangled in that (none have so far), as it’s black it looks a bit better than a large expands of white.
