Although I think the soil here is on the acid side (I have a tester somewhere, I should check!), I've grown my two bushes in ericacious compost, in largish planters. They've done alright, in fact I should probably trim them back a bit. Last year was not good for fruit off them and some naughty birds made off with the little there was . Forgot to mention yesterday, I'd a robin for company through most of the day's work. It first started taking an interest on Saturday. When I stepped back a bit, a second robin appeared, and they rooted for bugs together (and chased off a speug which tried to join in). By the end of the day, it was about a foot away. Expecting to find it perched on my shoulder next |

Cherry Blossom soon I have mowed the lawn, got a load of pots ready to sow stuff indoors (by the French Windows), probably squash, sunflowers, cabbages, lettuce. I found some Californain Popy seeds too, might try those. |

I thought that opium came from the gum of the fleshy seed pods rather than the seeds themselves. Not that I have any experience , but given the numbers of poppies that grow in my garden, I am always careful to refer to them as "Oriental" poppies rather than "Opium" poppies in case someone overreacts and calls the police |

I've got no idea. Nothing like as streetwise as I like to make out!

there's enough substance in the seeds you may have eaten sprinkled on some breads to show up in the most sensitive of tests. However, Flatlander is correct about the sap/gum being most concentrated. I've never been brave enough to try to harvest my own seeds for cooking with, but I'm partial to poppy seed and lemon cake and have been tempted to try in those years when the poppies have self-seeded everywhere. |

That argument won't wash in Dubai, Flatlander thenational.ae There used to be the big red poppies with massive seed heads here, but they died off. Then I grew some smaller ones, which ended up smothered. There are random poppies here and there which I think are Icelandic poppies. |
