Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

When (if!) I come off HRT I'll be aiming to increase my phytoestrogen intake in advance. Edamame beans play havoc with my cantankerous colon but I'm happy to use calcium fortified soya milk, tofu and tempeh.

Is there a time limit for how long you can stay on HRT? My current prescription seems to be working really well so I was hoping not to change for a few years yet.

You wonder what the point of HRT is if it just delays menopause symptoms? Are they any easier to cope with when older?

That'd be good, GM. At least 10 years would be OK but I'd prefer more if possible.

There isn't an official time limit although the increased risk of breast cancer starts to become significant after five years. With the current state of evidence, I think the decision should normally be the woman's provided she is in a position to understand any additional risks she faces and give informed consent. There are a few medical situations (Gymfreak and her known clotting disorder would be one) where as a GP I wouldn't prescribe HRT and would refer on.

Delaying menopausal symptoms can make a lot of sense if, for example, you're in a demanding work role and can't accommodate the disruption caused by disturbed nights, hot flushes and brain fog, but you may be retired and better able to manage in ten years' time.
