Avios is the rewards currency of British Airways. Air miles as they used to call them, although you can get them by transferring Nectar Points from Sainsbury's. 80,000 Nectar points buy enough Avios to fly Economy to the USA for £100 return. Although that's no mean feat to earn that many Nectar points, I've been focussed on maximising my collection for some time. And now I'm not using them anyway. I'll use them for £1 flights to Europe instead. |

I was able to transfer my avios TO nectar for a much better rate on hotel rooms. Only works for UK residents (so I did it through mum). BA also paused ability to book rooms directly with them so DS17 business class return Iceland to Tasmania points were all lost 😭😭😭. BA stopped flying to Iceland and what with covid we could never us them. Bastards. |

I paid £570 for both of us to go to Chicago - used £460 worth of Avios - economy (or as BA dress it up World Traveller). HOD - get a BA Amex card use it for everything & build up Avios (air miles) there’s no annual fee for the card - other options with an annual fee will give you more points & offers but you have to work out if that’s advantageous ? |

I've got a Virgin credit card and am building up Virgin Atlantic points. Find it hard to work out how much value they actually deliver though; flight pricing seems so variable, it's hard with a quick glance to work out how much the same flight would cost without any points (caveat, I've not looked very carefully yet) Don't know if that is similar with BA and Avios points. |

Virgin points can also be used on KLM and Air France for flights from the UK, possibly more so later in the year when Virgin Atlantic properly joins the Delta/KLM/AF-led SkyTeam Alliance. That was my main purpose for getting a VA Credit card. My local little airport only has one scheduled international destination, Amsterdam on KLM, although it's worked out well for me for the USA. Looking at the exact same flights as I've booked to New York, my 95000 Virgin Points work out at approximately 1p each, which is probably not bad value if you look at the points as a reward for what you'd be spending anyway. It's always better value to use points on Business Class fares than Economy - often a cash fare can be had for less than the taxes, fees and surcharges element of an economy reward flight. Avios are a bit more predictable and they offer good value on short-haul European flights which can be had for £1 plus, for Berlin for example, 18500 Avios. The best bang for your buck for those, though, are the £35 flights (Berlin needs 9500 Avios for this). All these flights include checked luggage, which is a benefit in itself, and can be amended if things change. |

Hopefully I’ll have enough Avios earned for a Berlin flight in September.

One year I got into Berlin and snagged a Club Europe flight from London City on Avios. Couldn't make it as I believed there was a three-line whip at work, so had to defer my race entry and was happy that cancelling the flight only cost me £35, instead of having to lose the lot if I'd flown with the Harp one or the Orange one or one of them fellas. (As it was, the following year, I flew KLM, which I still vastly prefer short haul if timings are right, as I connect at Schiphol 40 minutes after leaving rather than having to wait in the cold for a connection at Doncaster station after an hour or Piccadilly station after three hours.) |

Hi, my travel insurance is up for renewal and I was wondering what companies people use for insurance, including cover for USA? I usually like to have cover for running events/races included.
