ShowMeHills seems to be android only? Not Apple? Peakfinder ( $4.99) seems to be on Apple - but no ide how good it's UK coverage is. Viewranger premuim (for skyline) is £4.99 (full map version for UK, £20 something)
As Cerrertonia says, they identify by GPS & compass, not imagery.
Very much enjoying this thread. I have a leather-bound AA road atlas somewhere, from 1948 (from memory). It was my Grandad's and I came across it when I was sorting through things after him and Gran died a few years ago. They drove to lots of places in Europe (I've B&W photos of them in Switzerland, Italy, France) in an Austin A40 with suitcases strapped to a roof rack through the 60s. It's strange as my Mum (their second daughter) really wasn't a keen traveler at all, and she only ever went on a plane once, and that was to Jersey! Her parents, on the other hand, went all over the place as when Gran got fed up of driving to places, they took to the air instead. I absolutely love travelling and over the years have been very lucky in that regard, and wonder if that passion came from my grandparents in some way.
When abroad, one of the first things I do is try and get a local map of some description, usually just from a tourist information type of place. And then, I find the highest view point that is nearby and make my way up, either by foot or if there is some other mode of transport, I'll use that I'm annoyed at myself as I haven't kept these free maps, and over the years I have wished that I had kept hold of them. I have some, but by no means all.
We're the same Big_G...when we go travelling somewhere new, we'll always pick up a map of the area. If we really like the place, we'll buy a bigger map of the whole area.
