I go through so many maps of different areas that buying paper maps has kind of gone away. I've tried others but now I have an OS maps subscription and I print onto ToughPrint to take a paper copy with me. I print so much that I've saved a fortune over buying the paper maps. I can head onto the hills with the map downloaded to the app on my phone and a paper copy in my pack.

Though for fav map sites.....I love hiking in the Alps and I can lose days browsing the beautiful Swiss maps

I'm a big fan of Garmin BaseCamp and BirdsEye digital mapping, some people hate it but I've now been using it for long enough to know its vagaries and it's a tremendous database. I have to admit that I still buy paper maps and only a couple of days back some new ones dropped through the letterbox. Yesterday I went through the lot and redeemed all the digital codes for OS mapping, it's a very neat software implementation and the OS app is tremendous. I don't carry my phone on the Fells with me, so it's more for reference really.... what I tend to do is take screenshots from BC and print those out for use on the Fells.

ViewRanger looks like an interesting app. A lot of people have put routes on it in my area so that will be useful.

Unless it’s changed now, it’s annoying that paying for an OS maps subscription doesn’t mean I can use OS maps in other apps without paying again.

I love the OS App and use it to check I'm where I think I am on the paper map - when I'm not too busy enjoying the view (oops that happens...)

Printing bits of the map is OK if you have a plan for exactly where you're going, but when away for a few days it's nice to have a pile of maps available to have the choice of where to go next.

Cheers, DT. I hadn't realised it would be quite so poular, but it's great to get all these resources in one place.

I should add, it was Trin's idea too :-)

Big up to Homer too. That website with the old maps is magic. I had great fun looking at the start of the Yorkshireman marathon on a 1888 map of Haworth area last night

Yes, those are great links. Those Swiss maps are beautiful by the way. I'd happily have one of those framed on my wall.

My big idea (which might already exist, but I’ve not come across it) is to develop an app that allows you to identify the landscape and features when you point your phone camera at the view, a bit like those boards you get at viewpoints.

It must be possible.
