DrF - the car parked next to today was advertising New Forest Navigation. Seems they run 1 or 2 day courses, if of interest.

No idea if they are any good, just seemed topical.

And yes, compass for real, or phone or garmin have them. Or sun and time, or moss on trees ;-)

The OSM is good. Had fun making a few corrections online.

Mainly so fetch routes would go under the railway bridge, not divert me 3 miles

I have the OS maps app on my smartphone, and it is really good. Impossible to get lost.

I’ve been in the middle of the top of Kinder, with an arrow showing me where I am. Just no signal to download the relevant, and useful, map.
So now I download or print in advance.
