Not exactly playing to the audience here, but I don't get the fascination with going to the inaugural. I follow the page to get heads up on new events that I can attend in future, but not to attend the first one. I've been to one (Vogrie) and it was a really good event, but assume I would have enjoyed it just as much if I'd gone to event 3 or 4. I've let Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, Livingston, Portobello and a few of the Glasgow ones all pass me by and attended at a later date and don't feel like I've missed out. Inaugrals are too busy, better to go when the event is bedded in, there's less other tourists and I get to finish in a better position (run not a race I know).

Speaking as an ED, it's not incredibly helpful for people to turn up mob-handed to an inaugural. It's taken us nearly three years at Cleethorpes to consistently, week-on-week deliver a parkrun to greater numbers than our inaugural, although by now the difference is we've changed the route, we've got well-bedded in procedures, well-experienced volunteers, nearly everyone knows the process, it's a much more polished affair and we can happily handle those sorts of numbers.

As RD for our inaugural I was almost completely clueless, our first ever "finish area" team had had two chances to get experience at Scunthorpe and, because I'd invited a couple of friends down to give me some friendly faces and feedback, I was able to get prompted when I corpsed on the pre-run briefing.

They've just done an inaugural at Normanby Hall, and one of my core team took a group there. To be fair, he's that event's ambassador, he had to be there; but I stayed away, I'll give them a couple of weeks to bed in and then I'll go and take a look myself.

This discussion's been done many times before, though.

I guess threads like this are part of the problem... although incredibly useful.

The nearest I've got was a #2 at Seaton, although that was a fluke as I happened to be on holiday close by.

I remember when Tooting was being launched it was incredibly secretive to keep numbers down, with the official parkrun webpage only going live on the Friday night.

Maybe the test events could stay in the system - after all those people have effectively run a parkrun. That would mean that an unspecifed number of events have already taken place and the 'official' launch would be #3 or whatever. A bit less shiny for the inaugural magpies?

I'd be tempted to send a targeted email to all those with multiple inaugurals on their profile, to remind them why it's a difficult thing for the organising team - just to see what sort of effect it would have.

I'm with Brucester on this - that's the reason I watch this thread - to see if any new parkruns are coming near me or the places that I frequent. I went to the inaugural Reigate one because it's a mile from my house.

And other than that, not much interest to collect an inaugural

About This Thread

There may be an inaugural parkrun happening near you. Best to check with the local parkrun volunteers to see if they want you to know about it or not.

Otherwise there are plenty of already established parkruns to go to in the UK and abroad, see: parkrun.org.uk
