Nowhere near 900 new runners, when you consider inaugural hunters, local tourists and Little Stoke refugees. Pomphrey was also down 100 ish and I guess Wotton took a hit.

Fizz :-)
There were 88 at Eastville doing their first parkrun. Plus 45 unknowns, most of whom were within the 450(ish) tokens.
Around 100 runners had done more than 100 (total) parkruns.

Perhaps they should subtract a parkrun from your total if you attend an inaugural.

I was RD at an inaugural not that long ago (and attended another inaugural just before to see what it was like as part of my 'training').
Based on who has run since at my home event, I can categorise runners at an inaugural into 4 groups: a) they are new to parkrun and this is their nearest b) they usually run at another event and this has become their nearest c) they usually run at another event nearby e.g. within an hour and that will remain their home event d) they are serial tourists who like visiting inaugurals
From my experience, the numbers in category d are actually quite small (though I understand used to be more).
The greatest mass seems to be from category c and this will therefore depend on local population density and number/size of parkruns within an hour.
The best solution? It's all about encouraging those at nearby parkruns to give the new event a few weeks to bed down, by either pro-actively communicating, or by keeping the lid on publicity.

On the subject of closest parkruns CharlieP, you've missed out Bushy and Kingston. I live in the middle of the pair and at their closest they are about a mile apart. In fact by my calculations if both events started on time, and you were to set off on Kingston parkrun, duck out over the Lock and join Bushy Park at Teddington Gate, with a sub-20 minute PB you'd be ahead of the lead bike! Of course the marshals may have something to say about it and if you tried to go through the funnel and take a token you'd probably get a parkrun ban, but what a way to go out eh?

I haven't looked in detail at more than a couple of places - I took the *much* simpler approach of taking the co-ordinates of the pins on the events map and applying Vincenty's formula (using the WGS 84 datum surface) to calculate the Great Circle distance between every parkrun.

The new Great Denham parkrun will be just under 3k (crow-flies) from Bedford parkrun. We're interested to see what effect it has on our numbers.

@Dave - That's a good analysis and seems reasonable. I have attended about half a dozen inaugurals (back when it didn't seem to be a problem) and only one didn't fall into the C category.
I think the problem with asking people to give new events time to bed down is that a significant enough number of people hear that request but decide that it doesn't apply to them.

From a quick glance at the results of Eastville and Thornbury it seems that Thornbury had a higher percentage of new parkrunners and also quite a lot of locals who only had very small numbers of parkruns previously...just because it's now far easier for them to get to their new event. Eastville had load of non-Bristol area club runners in the results and far more people with massive numbers of parkruns to their names.
The reduction in numbers at the other local events wasn't massive and they were each down about 50-80 runners from last week, but still within their normal variability of numbers.

I think a proportion of "local" tourists visit to show their support of a new event not realising that it might be creating a problem ( I certainly had no idea it was such a big problem until reading stuff on here )
