Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Oops. Sorry missed a couple of comments while I was looking for the information. Sharkie has better info as she trained as a competitive athlete. Please ignore my comment.

And hopefully you'll find what does work. I'm a morning person so getting up and running or walking at about 6am then weight training sessions at about 2 or 3pm works for me. Sounds like it wouldn't be what you'd be comfortable with.

That's the thing Ness I am hypothesizing ATM as I don't know what I will be like but I do know my main session eg run will have to be first thing!

I know Mr Pix watching sport in the afternoon so I am thinking maybe do my fitness stuff AM then housework/garden PM

But then what about weather? eg too hot to garden?! Maybe I am overthinking the need to have a PLAN!

Pix - I'd suggest doing whatever it is, running, weights, core work at a time that suits you best.

You're far more likely to do your planned training that way and more likely to enjoy it, which is so important.

My preference is to run early, out before 6 am. Gym/core/pilates/whatever done mid morning.

What I do is: Tues/Thurs run then a small weights session straight afterwards - upper body mostly. Weds/Fri gym and a longer session. Sat/Sun run, Monday rest. That gets in 4 runs, 4 weights sessions.

All first thing in the morning, I should add. I can't motivate myself to do much in the afternoon. Strike before the mind can persuade you otherwise is my motto! 😁

Of course you have to do what suits you - but it looks like (correct me if I'm wrong) you're not talking major weights work here. I'm a bugger for avoiding warm ups but sometimes a bit of mobility/stability work is exactly the ticket

...and that dodgy knee needs addressing!

In How to Support a Champion, Steve Ingham talks about improving the impact of training on a university rowing crew (IIRC) by getting them to stop squashing all their training into the early morning before the start of lectures and to create windows of time to separate the various modalities so that they were coming into each activity reasonably fresh. This is definitely my own preference now that I'm time rich.

Oh no indeed sharkie not very heavy!

I think one of my issues is in my head because I will now have all the time to do all the things and I want to do everything! It’s a case of working out what to do when without breaking myself by doing too much too soon.

I’ve never been in this situation of freedom as when I was teaching and had “long holidays” I was hardly training. So I’m having to go on what I know of me and my inner sloth 🦥 now. Hopefully things will change.

You lot are so inspiring

Pix - you'll soon set up your own routine that works for you. But don't try and do everything right from day one. You can build up your training and other activities gradually rather than stress yourself out trying to do everything immediately.

... a weights wire for women.

And in case you're wondering about that title, well, I like alliteration and one can be too po-faced about the use of girl/lady/woman.
