Given your other commitments I reckon that's a good - and achievable -aim. Session was good!

In the gym tonight. I was amused to spot a rather large gent relaxing in the pool area, who stayed in the same place for the whole hour I was there. I can just imagine him saying ‘I go to the pool for an hour every day’. I did also find it slightly weird as kids lessons were going on earlier. And it’s not like going to a spa even if it has a sauna. |

We have a couple of old guys that come in the gym, dawdle on the treadmill for 10 minutes and then just talk football for hours. It's slightly annoying if they're standing near me doing their football chatter but they don't really get in the way and I realise for them getting out is an important social part of their lives. But I expect they tell all they go to the gym for an hour.

Well the Guardian article is totally brilliant of course, and personally speaking I 'know' I've got pretty strong legs at 71. (Upper body another matter) However this caveat is important: 'The researchers said people in the study were generally more active than the population as a whole – walking for an average of nearly 10,000 steps a day – so were not necessarily a representative sample.' Then again, people on Fetch ARE 'generally more active than the population as a whole' so perhaps we can ignore the caveat? |

If the study is active people who don't lift heavy weights vs. active people who do lift heavy weights, I think we can ignore the caveat.

As for lifting heavy stuff I'm keeping going with the Caroline Girvan dumbbells programme I mentioned a while ago. Challenging myself enough but not too much to hamper gains is a challenge in itself - but I do think I am stronger after resolutely keeping to the programme for over eleven weeks now. I had proof on Saturday when I competed at shot put for my club, with the 4kg shot used by women up to 50 years old. It's 3kg for 50 -74, then goes down to 2.5kg. (Am not built like your average shot putter - even at amateur level) With no recent practice - though I do have decent technique - I threw as well as I had five years ago. Go Caroline! Go me! |
