I used one at one of the gyms Nic goes to - i call it a ‘spit and sawdust’ type place. Put it this way, you don’t forget to wash your hands after the session - everything feels just a little bit grubby. But it’s cheap… and it has lots of extremely good weights and machines.
I agree re doing strength work as we get older. Back in 2019 I read an article on muscle loss as we age and sent me straight off to the gym. I've managed to increase my muscle % but don't think I'll ever increase my strength significantly.
I saw a good video about how to work up to a pull-up, ie what bits to train and how to do easier versions. Like all these things it’s not just brute strength in your arms, you need core and other stuff too. I can’t remember where, but I suspect if you Google there will be videos you can look at
