Another question about floor press: are you handed the bar or are you under/in some sort of rack so the bar is above you already?

It's really good for you to use dumbbells from time to time even if you have appropriate barbells. I got told off about my lack of core control this morning.

I am SUCH a cheat! (It was quite interesting but not specifically weight training related so I will probably blog it)

I have a foam thing I have over my bar for when I do squats as I don't like the digging in feeling

That's DEEP core control - I might have a visible six pack (in the right light) but I have become increasingly loathe to use the important deeper muscles. Rectus is all v very well and very pretty but transverse and pelvic floor are the kiddies!

I have a foam sleeve too. They're well useful - if I remember to take it to the gym. My old gym in Hastings had a couple, a good gym should do.

I do floor presses in the rack at the gym, just set the hooks low enough that my short arms can reach from the floor.

On squats I prefer a low bar back position (across the delts). It's a more stable position than across the shoulders. I get funny looks from the girls in the gym when I squat without a foam pad

the more I look at this thread the more I really want to know what I can do but as I am no longer a gym member I can't find out LOL
Home user with limited kit and training alone does limit you a little
I like the floor press idea .... I could possibly put the bar on my spare dinning chairs I guess? Or maybe not sure could I fit under my step to allow it to be higher and safer to lift heavier? hmmm
See this is why I need to move house to have a double garage and convert one to be a gym with proper kit! LOL

Thanks Sharkie & Corrah. I watch this thread but I won’t contribute too much for a couple of reasons. There’s an impressive wealth of knowledge and flow of information in here, I get the impression that if too many blokes start contributing/throwing their weight around (pun unintentional) it would spoil that flow. I’m not lifting weights much at the moment, I’m using Calisthenics for my strength training (you *may* remember I was quite dismissive of Pistol Squats a year or two back, calling them a circus trick…lol they took a large bite out of my ego when I tried them properly, I’m now a convert too them), so I’d feel a bit of a fraud contributing.

Evil Pixie, if you’re limited for space & equipment, you can get immensely strong using body weight, though it can be a slow, tiresome, frustrating journey. All you’d need to start is a floor, an elevated surface and a pull up bar. Later on you could add some parallette bars and gym rings.

... a weights wire for women.

And in case you're wondering about that title, well, I like alliteration and one can be too po-faced about the use of girl/lady/woman.

Here's a strength standards for women thing Duracel found for us
