Love it, HellsBells! I occasionally drool over cross-stitch fabric and threads, but the last thing I actually did was when I cross-stitched a motif and a motto on a bag I'd made out of an old polycotton shirt. Counting the threads on THAT was quite an endeavour :)

Glad the party has moved here while I was out.

Toks, that sounds really worthwhile. And Girlie ... I SO want to make socks now! I have a load of Noro sock yarn that I got reduced on t'internet (some on eBay and some at The Black Sheep), but it's destined to become a Kaffe Fassett kelim-style jumper for eL Bee! rather than socks :)

hiya - blimey I have loads of different projects on the go - have had a cross stitch on the frame for poss 4 years - and at least 3 knitting things on the go. the thing is that i hate to sit and knit if there is housework needing done - so as you can imagine........;-)

would love to learn to crochet - as a wee girl when i went to stay at my grans for a weekend she would teach me but once home and away from her guidance I just lost the knack. still have 2 big blankets that she made for me and my eldest son when he was a baby - and would love to make those blankets so that I could give as gifts as they are just the loveliest things - and always look lovely regardless of the decor in bedroom matching or not.

I completely failed to grasp crochet despite my grandmother trying to teach me. She did very fine and dainty work. I'm not sure why I didn't catch on to crochet, because she taught me to knit and that was easy.

I got some Noro sock yarn, but I didn't totally *love* it, though the colours were gawjuss.

All my knitting stuff is on www.ravelry.com - my name over there is knittingbadger. At the moment I have go 2 pairs of xmas pressie socks on the go and am doing a mystery knitalong pair of socks (that's a patttern released in parts over a period of time with no picture) which is quite good fun.

Fetchie sherryf knits baby clothes for prem babies in special care, which is a fabulous idea.

HB is right about Cambridge - shocking for yarn and John Lewis has a tiny department now (it used to be a separate shop on it's own). Happily, out here in the sticks we are overburdened with independent yarn shops. I wonder why that is?

I bought a load of stuff on t'internet from down your way recently, Spinkle - theyarngallery.co.uk . I got a few hanks to start with (can't resist a discount), and it was so gorgeous that I practically cleared the shelves. I'm looking forward to making little baby clothes with the 4-ply slub cotton.

Not sure I get what all the adulation is about Noro yarns generally, especially having seen the photos in the pattern books and on Ravelry of the yarn knitted up. The self-striping is a bit clunky for my taste. But there's a particular pattern that demands two different colourways in 4-ply, and whereas Kaffe Fassett uses a variety of yarns in each colourway I thought I'd try a lazy version with two different Noro sock wool colourways.

We are relatively OK for yarn shops here. There's a good independent in Keswick - it looks like it's been bombed, with packets and balls of yarn everywhere, but the owner is a real enthusiast - and of course there's The Wool Clip. I think I'm better off now than I was in Birmingham.

We're well supplied

V'rap, where did you go to in Brum? I'm having a bit of trouble finding a local wool shop. Or else I'm just doing a crap job of google searching!

that cross stitch is beautiful, hb. i haven't done a cross stitch in a few years now. i need to take photos of stuff and keep a record of what i've made.

i've got a beautiful tapestry cushion on the go as well but haven't touched it in about 2 years. i'm also part way through a lacey scarf in gorgeous wool that i bought in the usa. found the best yarn shop i've ever been to while there on holiday.

i'd love to be able to crochet blankets, m4p. i did go to a beginners' class then practised when i got home. was just getting the hang of it and picked up a knitting project and set myself back to square 1!

i've got quite a stash of some beautiful yarn so i really need to get going with it.

but i did have a eureka moment with my coasters! i'd changed to smaller needles so it wasn't so 'floppy' and had used fairisle instead of intarsia for the motif and realised that i was knitting too tight and pulling the wool across the back too much. i've done another one and it looks lots better. so i'll take it to my friend tomorrow and see if she thinks it will sell (she does this stall every year up in yorkshire, so she knows the audience). glad i figured it out, it was really annoying me. i don't have perfect tension but it usually passes muster!

spinkle, i'm jaynieb on ravelry but i don't have anything on there yet, i just browse! off to have a look at your stuff next :)

M4P, as far as I know, there was nowhere decent in Brum to buy wool. When I first moved there, House of Fraser and the long-departed Lewis's had excellent ranges, if a bit expensive, and there was a delightful little wool shop in Selly Oak where I used to go and chat with the owner when I was on maternity leave after my first baby. HoF stopped doing wool and I don't know if it ever started again. I never really bothered much after that - between having Ivor and the advent of internet shopping I didn't have much time to knit and I actually gave away all my needles, yarn and patterns.

In the absence of a good LWS, use the internet. There are some brilliant sites and if you know what you're looking for you can often find somewhere selling your chosen yarn at a discount. I'm currently on here celticove.com because I did a Google search to find out whether something I was watching on eBay was worth bidding on and this site came up. McA Direct, Black Sheep Wools and Norfolk Knits are also good places to have a mooch.

(My top tip is that although you can get some cracking bargains on eBay, especially on the less well-known brands and on auctions finishing at funny times of the day, you should never bid on anything there without Googling it first.)
