You’re hat turned out really well CasB ... but there’s all those other methods you’ve just mentioned to try out...definitely worth exploring.
What’s your next project?

Thanks runnyeyes, that's very kind Yes lots to learn and try out, I'm really enjoying it.
Next is a little top-down cardigan for a friend's brand new baby girl, so I might try doing magic loop on the circular needle for the sleeves. I'm trying to find patterns that just have one or two new-to-me things each time - this one has M1L and M1R for the raglan increases, and backwards loop cast on. Thankfully there are some really helpful YouTube videos out there!

You Tube is a blessing - I've used it so much since I took up knitting again after Christmas.

I am a copetent knitter but I really can't get my head around crocheting- really wanted to make a basic blanket for the grandson to use up my wool but really seem to be struggling with just getting started without it looking a mess

Starting can be hard. I recommend using a larger hook than you think and keeping the starting chain very loose, and not bothering too much about which bit of each chain you hook into. Generally keep your crochet loose, make sure you pull the loop all the way through.
You could also look at using a foundation row, rather than a chain, try searching for foundation sc/dc on YouTube.

My oldest daughter has got very into crocheting. She’s made herself a chevron blanket and has now started on crochet bralettes which are proving very popular with her friends! She may even make some to sell.
