I would probably go for socks - it's so difficult to really know what someone would like, but comfortable hand knitted socks seem like such a secret luxury.

The last thing I made for someone unrelated to me as a thanks-for-being-nice present was regifted or, more probably, sold on a market stall for charity (I never did ask the person I saw wearing it where she got it from) so I'm the wrong person to advise.

A short cardigan is useful and simple, especially if knitted top-down.

I really need to find someone to crochet a reindeer pattern for me for my grandson for Christmas - way above my level, was a tad optimistic buying it.

There are a lot of great hat patterns out there - I'm making a lot for Christmas this year. It's a fun way to try out new techniques! There's a good thread on ravelry: ravelry.com

I think a cowl might be good too.

I like Poppy’s idea.

I was just thinking I need a new scarf or something for the winter!

One of my colleagues makes knitted tree ornaments for everyone. Last year they were Christmas puddings.

Thank you for your ideas. A hat and/or cowl for playground duty in the winter, I think!
