That's looking so good, Girlie - the orangey-goldy bits look great.

Hi folks
I've been advised that when I make my first pair of socks to use a heavier sock yarn as it will be easier. I've looked at some sock yarns on various wool websites but I can't seem to see a heavier yarn. Does this in fact exist and if so, please could you recommend where. Or will I just have to use a double strand of sock yarn? Also what size needles should I use?
Many thanks :)

I do all my socks with standard sock yarn on 2.5mm. There is a regia 6 ply available which is more like DK that gives a heavier sock but tbh apart from growing more quickly I can't really see any advantage

I think the person was suggesting that because it would knit up quickly I wouldn't get board and let it turn into a UFO ;-)

I think the whole point of specific 'sock yarn' is that it's thin and hard wearing (usually has a bit of nylon in it rather than just wool). But you can use any yarn to make socks if you want, with an appropriate sized needle. Usually slightly smaller than usual for the yarn to get a denser fabric.

I made my first pair out of dk just to get the idea of knitting in the round and the sock construction techniques. I think there is even a pattern for a 'pretend' sock that gives you the basics of sock knitting without rounds and rounds of plain knitting.

If you're familiar with knitting in the round I'd just go straight to a regular pair of socks with normal sock yarn. They'll be more wearable that way too.

I never knitted in the round so I like the idea of a 'pretend' sock. I love knitting but lets just say I'm not a natural!!
