I was thinking sock yarn too, Girlie. Waterproof isn't essential - they just have to not soak up several times their weight in water like 100% wool does, and dry out reasonably quickly.
I got round to thinking that it would be quite easy to incorporate a thumb loop to anchor them in place ... or a full glove, with some light padding ...and then thought, I might as well just make an entire base-layer top

the lacy scarf i'm knitting has a waste-yarn cast on because i'll be knitting the two ends together. i've not done it before, i thought it was an inspired idea
jean moss does lovely patterns for araucania with sort of reversed darts to make flared peplums and cuffs - gorgeous!
i got a mochimochi pattern book from my fetch secret santa and that uses i-cords a lot. can't wait to put it to good use now

wrist warmers would work, v'rap, so that it comes down to the start of your fingers with just a gap in the seam for your thumb. or would you knit them in the round?

This is a lovely thread! I feel thoroughly inspired to get crafty, the problem is, that I want to try everything at once and I have no idea where to start! I'd love to quilt, knit a blanket, make roman blinds ahhhhh.... I think I'll be sensible and start with a small, achievable knitted thing

I'd knit then in the round, RD. I'd be looking to make them full-arm length

Just been to Ravelry and perused your stashes. I need to take a load of photos ... in fact, what I REALLY need to do is organise my wool properly and make a note of what I bought it for, because almost all of it was bought with a project in mind (some, I'm afraid, I bought just because it was pretty and a bargain!).
I do not, absolutely not, need to visit the Wollmeise shop, ever. Probably

sorry, yes, i meant extended wrist warmers :). just the principle of a thumbhole which would keep them anchored down onto your hand. would you put elastic in the top to keep them up?
sounds good, ps

I'd like to avoid putting elastic in the top, RD, so some elasticity in the knitted fabric is essential to stop them wriggling their way down my arms when I'm on the bike. Looking at the shape of my upper arm, though, I'm not sure it would work. Maybe I could suspend them from the inside of the arm of my jersey using poppers or Velcro.
