lets exchange positive ideas on how to make Chrismas 2020 simple but good. Lots of people will be having less social events, less face to face time with family and friends and less time shopping. Wouldn't it be great if we could turn this into an opportunity instead of a dissappointment. What ideas do you have to share?

there are many, particualarly the older generation, who would love to recieve proper letters at Christmas if they cant have friends and family visit.
I have been reducing the number of cards I send each year, but perhaps this should be the year of the letter.

Nice idea Doc. I will try and shop local again, mostly did this last year and it was nice. Supported local independent shops too.

One of my solo Christmas traditions, that's totally covid proof, has been a festive movie countdown, including classic classics, some less well known oldies, and modern classics, even Christmas specials of some TV series. It's a solo tradition because Sam rarely wants to watch them with me, but other spice (plural of spouse, innit) may be more amenable. I also reread Hogfather most years in December.
A more sociable one is choosing the tree and decorating it and the rest of the house while listening to festive music (jazzy or choral, usually, rather than poppy) and drinking gluhwein. I always want to do it earlier than Sam does, but we do both enjoy it whenever it ends up happening. I like to collect decorations throughout the year so by the time we get to putting them on the tree it becomes a lovely way of remembering happy times.

We'll phone MiL on the day to say hi, once she's awake...they're 5 hours behind us here. If there's a phone line, I'll phone my stepsister where everyone spends Christmas...I wonder what their rules will be for Christmas or that will be phoning several homes instead!

One thing I will miss, which had become a new tradition in the last two years for me, is going to Köln with some friends from church camp for a weekend and buying things at the markets from craftspeople and artisans.
Mostly, tbh, we just bought food and looked at the pretty things, but I did get a lovely handmade kitchen knife for Sam last year and some original arts.
I'm not sure how to replace that.
There's a local 'feel good' market that has the same sort of stalls, but who knows if it'll be happening in December, and it won't be as pretty or with my friends who live up in North Holland.
Also the work team Christmas lunch... We can do something MS Teams based, but it'll be a challenge to make it more than just a glorified meeting with silly jumpers.
