JJF - I understand Gilly Mara took a group on the Dart last weekend. Was that your group? (Caveat; I have not been stalking! Her blog came up on the WWR fb page and...well... whattagirl!) |

That was us, Jubear. Gilly is a good friend and an awesome paddler. She is very good at persuading you out of your comfort zone. I have learnt more about paddling white water from her in two days than I learned in thirty years paddling with others.

Capsized within a minute of putting in on the fast-moving Teign today. Couldn't get my spraydeck on and the flow took me, i failed to edge, the cockpit swamped in a heartbeat and flipped me like a little beauty... I swam for around 500m before we found somewhere without steep banks to beach the wreckage. Bit of a clusterfuck tbh and a big lesson learned - if its flowing fast, then spraydeck ON before launch, that was really stupid & obvious - and pay attention to the water and also, be brave enough to get to the start and say "nah, not today" if that's the case. i was lucky that the guy already on the water today was a cocky 16 year old who delighted in his rescue opportunity and herded me and my kit to the first available bit of shore. I was healthily nervous for the rest of the paddle! there is one positive: now i know i can open my eyes underwater, contact lenses or no. |

I had a lovely paddle yesterday out on the sea around Newton Ferrers in a borrowed, very pretty, composite sea kayak yesterday. It was un-nerving to take in around the rocks cos they are so fragile, so I spent a lot of time staying out to sea and riding out the swell, which was a different kind of un-nerving cos they feel a lot more tippy than my plastic piggy. MrJB borrowed a plastic sea kayak which is more forgiving of both rocks and broaching waves, and he quite enjoyed himself. My SuperHumanfriend Shani had a plastic tub sea kayak and couldn’t see what the fuss was about – but she brought enough sandwiches for everyone so we’ll forgive her being good at what she does A superb way to spend an early spring sunny Sunday |

Just seen this group and thought I'd chip in a a sea kayaker based in Orkney (although most of you appear to be river yakkers here?)
