I tried Nellers' descending time ladder today but I added an ascending stroke ladder. So it was 20-15-10-5 minutes at 20-22-24-26 spm and 2k+20-17-14-10. Went well enough, slightly ahead of target for each segment. Oddly I found the 10 minutes at 24 spm to be the hardest.

Sea mist and mizzle here but warm and sticky so that was a sweaty one.

This isn't really for me but I'll just leave it here anyway:

I like the stuff At The Thousand put out, although I'm not sure I'll be using that drill. He's done some longer-form interviews with some good coaches looking at things like strength training and zone 2 work. Pretty good stuff, although he does have an understandable bias towards American rowers trying to get into college programmes.

I've managed about 15 minutes on the Erg last night and another 2 x 10 minutes this morning and all feels good in the lower back.

Consultant appointment booked for next Friday so hopefully a few more long term answers will be forthcoming from there on. In the meantime I'm going to get back on it as long as everything feels OK.

Nellers, great to hear !!

Just caught up in your back issue. Really sorry it’s played up again. Hope you get a definitive answer from your consultant 👍

Good to hear Nellers but take it easy ... !

Interesting idea in that vid but can't he just turn the knob up to 11?

Grief ! If he can’t feel enough resistance to force his arms straight on a clean 240 drag machine then he must have biceps of steel !!

Saw the consultant yesterday about my back issue. He had me wiggle and move and watched what happened then he prodded and poked and pulled my legs and looked thoughtful.

Upshot is that I've got an MRI scan booked next Saturday to find out if I've got a disk issue or damage to one of the little boney bits at the bottom of my spine.

Disk issues mean it can almost certainly be sorted by physio and strengthening work. The bone thing might be sortable like that but, depending how bad it is, might need surgery which I'd rather avoid if possible.

And either way it means no rowing for the time being until we've got to the bottom of things, and it seems unlikely that I'll be back to it with enough volume to feel like racing in December.

And I'm therefore both pissed off and hopeful for the longer-term future.

Glad you've got a MRI booked, at least you'll get a definitive answer!

Don't rule out BRIC just yet as you always manage to maintain fitness levels when you can't row (unlike me) and even if you're out for a month or two you've got time, but if you have to bin it then you're right to be hopeful for the future!

Similar in our household this week as Angie's decided to pull out of September's Berlin marathon, but she's going to concentrate on S & C for a month or two, so like you is pissed off but positive about the future 😊

Fingers crossed that this gets to the root of the matter, Nellers. We need to take care of our backs. Keep us posted.

Ah, the Berlin marathon. I did that about 20 years ago. Great event, and fascinating to be able to visit the former east, where I wasn't allowed to go when I was based in the city some 20 years before that in the military. I remember enjoying the run through the Brandenburger Gate and on along Unter den Linden.

Good luck to Angie with her rehab and recovery, Craggy. I keep telling myself that the key is to be able to do stuff, not to be able to do stuff today. I’m sure we’ll both get there.

I’ve never run abroad unless you count a lap of the Great Orme last year on holiday.🤔
