Cats Whiskers
Good news, Nellers. Hope the tester goes well. Can anyone give me some advice about the different PM versions, please? I'm thinking of getting a second hand rower but the C2 model Ds with PM5 I've seen are still quite pricey. I've seen some model Ds with PM3/PM4 that are more affordable. Are there any particular advantages to a PM5? The only one I'm aware of is the Bluetooth connection with ErgData, but I would probably fit a phone bracket to the top of the monitor anyway, so using a cable to connect wouldn't be a huge issue. Is there anything else I should be thinking about? Thanks in advance! |

It's a good benchmark, alpenrose. And I'm sure you'll soon take chunks off it.

I have a PM2+ CW and it all seems to work fine! Considering upgrading to a PM5 at some point. They're £155 from Concept 2. If a PM3/4 machine is over £155 cheaper than a PM5 one then get the cheaper one and upgrade if you want all the bells & whistles? |

The big advantage of the PM4 and PM5 that I can see is that they will pair with some ANT+ watches: concept2.co.uk You can then download the results like a standard run: fetcheveryone.com/t-15050801 (the laps aren't quite perfect 5 mins because I've paired mine to a very old FR60 I won off eBay for £20 - it only records "smart" intervals and not "1 second", but it's good enough for me). I think I went from a PM3 straight to a PM5 as I couldn't find any decently priced (i.e. cheap) PM4s, and the PM5 wasn't much more new from Concept2. I'm still using an old Model C erg, they are all compatible. I like the model C handle shape and a "C-breeze" fits much better than to the newer models rowperfect.co.uk I must get back on the erg sometime, my last row was in June! |

Surprising conversation with Mrs Nellers this evening. She has agreed that, given that all I use the gym for is the rower now, it will be cheaper in the long run to get our own C2. We've got space int eh shed as long as we can get rid of the multi-gym we don't use (Anyone want a second hand multigym for £100 by the way?). So I've been looking for a decent second hand C2, preferably a fairly new one with a PM5, and the prices are quite a big range. And then Mrs Nellers says "Well why not just buy a new one?" and I'm like "You do know a new one is £859 don't you?" and she's like "But you know it's going to work and you've got a guarantee and all that, and they'll deliver it so you're saving on collection costs" and I'm like "Well OK. If you insist." and try to make sure I've got the conversation recorded for later when she realises what she's agreed to. Still trying to work out if she's just winding me up. This could be an expensive Christmas for me.;-) |

Haha! Mrs Mouse did the same for me birthday before last. Suggest you give Mrs N a big kiss and get it ordered pronto. To be fair some of the prices being asked for newish machines on ebay are not far off the new price anyway. There are even a couple of chancers asking £ 165 - £ 180 for a new PM5 monitor (+postage!) when a NEW new one is £155 direct from C2. |

Its a device that just goes on giving Nellers. I've owned one now for 13 years and by far the best piece of kit I've ever had. There ARE a lot of good second hand ones out there which could save you a couple of hundred though. Very little to go wrong on them and even if they get worn ( chain, Shock Cord ) they can be changed by the user.

They are a good investment. I got mine secondhand about 10 years ago from a friend on the old Concept2 UK forum, and apart from upgrades to the PM, I've never needed to do more than clean it and oil the chain. The shock cord on mine is getting a little slack now though, so that'll need sorting soon.

Hi Jed and welcome to Fetch and the rowing thread. I guess the difference between getting a new or second hand one is about the guarantee and security. That last £200 on the price isn’t a problem in itself. Once we’ve decided we’ll pay £5-600 for a second hand one that will probably outlive me that extra bit isn’t a deal breaker. At least, that’s how i’m Rationalising it! |
