Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Hey. I’m down with that !

Ok. So. No handle down ! When you go for it, you go for it.

The secret is a bloody good warm up. Stress the system to make it ready to handle the lactic acid.

You need at least 3 km with bursts of race/TT pace in there and no more than 2 mins rest between warm up and your 2km TT test

I will post one late Saturday afternoon regardless of how bad it is. I suspect I can initially get … er .. hmm

Ok. Prediction time. I’ll try for 7:50. I’ll base my first 1500 on this target plucked from the air and then empty the tank on the last 500 and hope not to die ! 😁

Where do you think you’re at Nellers ? What’s your prediction ?

Something better than 7:30 would be nice but that's slightly faster than I'm doing my fastest intervals so far (1:52.5 pace?) so it's going to take some digging in. My session on Monday gave me 4 x 4 min all outside 1:53.something.

Maybe better than 7:35 is more realistic? THe last thing I want is another DNF.

Ok. So. A French split tactic ?

Out in 1:52 for the first 500 .. then.

Drop back to 1:53 to 1:54 for your next 1000, it feels a bit like a slight rest

… hammer the last 500 .. possibly only maxing out with 300 left when you can count out 28 last big strokes.

Advantages of this tactic are that you feel good for those first 500 ( don’t over cook this bit ) then when the pain starts to hit you drop back, ease off and just endure/survive the next 1km.

Don’t let your mind talk you out of this stage. You CAN see this but through .. the last 500 the euphoria kicks in when you realise you won’t die AND you can hit your target. The last 20 to 30 strokes you can smash totally anaerobically probably hitting sun 1:45s.

Or maybe make it up as you go along 😁

That feels like what I often end up doing when things are working well, mate. Fast start, settle in for the middle k then empty the tank and reach for the chunder bucket when you cross the line!

Doing it in a slightly more planned and conscious way might be a good idea.👍🏻

That’s my plan for Saturday .. albeit somewhat slower 🤣

It worked well in competition so sticking with what I know

… and Pete Marston ( Pete Plan ) coached me that way so I’m not about to argue !

I think you can smash it Nellers. I’d put money on you for a sub 7:30 if paced right.

I had a little look back at what I've done reasonably recently.

Back at the start of March (immediately pre-Covid) I did a 7:22.2, then at the start of June 7:33.6.

That 7:33.6 was only off the back of a rebuild back up to "normal" training levels and was supposed to be the benchmark to start the plan. I really should be in much better shape by now BUT the failure last month has hit my confidence.

When I've looked at the splits for that I did:

1:54.6

1:55.7 (3:50.3)
1:54.1 (5:44.4)
1:49.2 (7:33.6)

I'm leaning towards just setting up on Saturday with the pace boat set to re-row that and make sure I stay a bit ahead of it until the last 500, then kick it on if I can.

Just been measuring up for the rower. Turns out they’re bigger than I remembered!
Not sure now whether to look towards something like the Skierg instead as it’s got a smaller footprint.

I think I still prefer the idea of the rower though.

Sid. They do stack small and easy if general storage is the issue.
