5,000m for me this morning, instrux being to match the pace of the preceding 6,000m and accelerate a little in the final 1,000. Which I managed, albeit with it feeling a little harder than the previous row and at a slightly higher spm. But I did go for a hard run yesterday so maybe the legs were just a little fatigued still. A good session though. Given the weather forecast, there might be more erging and less running over the weekend. |

2 x 13 min @ r20 this afternoon for me. Pouring with rain outside but the shed was fine other than the sound of the rain. A bit steamy by the time I was done in there though.

6 x 500m here, ditto honking down with rain plus blowing a hoolie. All went well, targets achieved. Hopefully will be able to go for a run tomorrow.

The week so far has been: Mon: 3 x 4 minutes @ r28/ 4 min rest Wed: 3 x 7 min @ r26/ 3:30 rest threshold session Fri: 3 x 10 min @ r20/ 2 min rest tempo/ top end aerobic All of that felt manageable although the threshold session was a toughie. |

I'm still plugging away at the Beginners PP, now on week 4. Although I am amending it to suit myself. The trouble with this plan is that it does get a bit samey so I'm trying to inject some variety. So, eg, I'm doing the two weekly distance pieces at UT2 and UT1. There are some 10-min reps coming up soon and I'll change them to 4-3-2-1 stroke ladders. Also, I am trying to dip below the hwt threshold of 11st 11lb to qualify (just) as lwt. A couple of months ago I was 12st 4lb, now 11st 12 lb. Nearly there ... |

Started the week off with the speedy stuff: 4 x 4 minutes @ r28/ 4 min rests. Pace was a bit slower than last Monday (3 x4 min then so I can claim I was pacing myself a bit!). HR strap played up though. Last Monday it did the same and I swapped out the battery afterwards. It's behaved all week since then but this morning it was all over the place (reading 65 bpm a couple of minutes into a 4 minute piece at r28 is clearly not right!). Not sure what's going on with it at all now, beyond that it's not the battery. |

6,000m this morning. Sticky and muggy here. When I started the temperature in the room was 22.7 degrees and humidity 60%, when I finished it was 23.8 and 68%! I discovered that the drag factor was 95, which seems low. I bumped it up to 105 but couldn't sense much difference in action. Something to experiment with. |

I've been looking at getting an indoor rower to use in a home gym set-up which will probably mainly be used in the winter. The rower seems like a decent idea as it doesn't take up too much space when it's not in use and from memory they give you a hell of a workout! With the concept 2 rowers, is there any advantage in having the newest Performance Monitor units or the latest model rower? There seems to be a few very lightly used ones for sale for sensible money at the moment but they're often the slightly older models. |

The main difference is in connectivity. The latest version, the PM5, can sync with your phone if you like using apps such as Ergdata. It also has a backlight and can see an Ant hrm by itself, unlike the PM3 which needed an adapter doodah. My main worry with an older PM is that the previous versions were retired years ago. They are durable but they do have a finite life. As for the rower itself, the model D has been going for 15-16 years and is more or less unchanged in that time, other than the slinky new black paint job. A model C might seem a good deal but it went out of production when the D came in. Concept 2s are famously bulletproof so a model C at a decent price might possibly be worth considering if you're able to fix any wear and tear items. |

What Muttley said, . You can't go far wrong with a Concept2 but the newer monitors give you more options for workouts and connectivity. It's one of those things where, if you've never used the apps or anything, you might not be too bothered BUT once you get into regular use you'll wonder how you managed without them. I understand that getting a newer monitor (the PM5) from Concept2 and retrofitting it to an older model isn't a tough job, though, so it might be worth checkign the prices there before deciding whether you want to get a newer or older rower. (And you definitely want to get a rower. Best investment I ever made in terms of fitness kit for the home gym.) |
