I'd be happy to see that pace on just one stroke!
Working my way methodically through the Beginners PP, now in week 9. Set of 800s done this morning and just ahead of target pace so all is good, onwards and upwards and all that.

Nice one Muttley. I’m looking forward to (?) 6 x 500m at target 2k race pace this evening. That sounds like such fun!

Thanks for the heads-up about the rowing, Nellers. I caught a bit of it yesterday and am in awe of the stroke rates they maintain for 2K.
Your 800s and 500s (how I love those!) remind me that I must start doing some proper intervals. I've spent much of the last year making it up as a I go along and have done a few Tabata sessions and intervals at different rates within longer pieces in Zoom Ergos sessions, but haven't done much at higher rates or paces. Have fun, Nellers!

I did two learn to row sessions last week and so far I'm really enjoying it (even though there was a lot of standing around in a snowstorm during the first session!). We're learning in quad sculls with a coach as the cox, so we're getting good feedback. I'm finding it harder than I'd hoped to transfer erg technique to the water, though, but I think a lot of that's down to timing. We're not rowing very well together as a crew yet, so we keep getting out of sync and then blades get tangled.
I hope you get a chance to join a course soon, Craggy.

I had a look at the 2 local clubs Pothunter had suggested for me. Both operate from the same site and they both seem to be fixed seat gig rowing rather than sliding seat stuff, which sounds interesting but isn't what I'm really after. Thanks anyway, PH.
I think the rowing club in Leicester (my original home town and where most of my family still live) do beginner weekend courses and I had wondered about that when I'm up there but realistically it's probably a retirement project so a fair few years off yet!

Public service announcement: 6 x 500m at your planned 2k race pace is a stupid idea and there is no justification for that kind of behaviour!

Thanks CW I think I'll have to chase them up as I know their members are back training now. Pleased you've enjoyed your sessions so far, I imagine timing and stability will take a while to master!
Well done Nellers 1:44/45 pace is very good going, your hard work is paying off! I've done a few 6x500m in the last couple of months and found 1:47/48 quite difficult, I certainly couldn't manage sub 1:45's!!

Thanks Craggy. I guess the base building and general strength/fitness stuff I've been doing off the rower has helped a bit but getting the consistent steady build up back on the Erg is really having an effect.
The Wolverine plan gives these race pace sessions as needing to be 4k of work, so the "full" session is 8 x 500m, but with as much rest between as you need. I was done after 6 and the last rest 500m took nearly 5 minutes!
I'm hoping to build to the full 8 x 500m in a few weeks. They go in a rotation with (theoretically) 16 x 250m and 4 x 1000m, plan being that each time through the cycle you go a little bit quicker. That 4 x 1km terrifies me!
Next week is down as 3 x 1km and trying to hold 1:46 or better. We'll see how that goes!

Yes consistency is key! Yeah I've been sitting down to do 8 reps but end up happy to get 6 done, mind you when I was doing the Pete plan they had 3.30 rests whereas I've been taking 2 min rests which is quite a difference I suppose.
Looks like a good mix of sessions, good luck with those 1k reps next week!

The rolling plan from here is to do a level 1 (race pace), level 2 (threshold) and level 3 (tempo) every week, and then at least one or two aerobic steady state rows as well. Hitting all the bases and hopefully seeing the benefit of that range of paces.
Seems to be working so far. I must be about due a 2km TT as a marker for where I am I guess, but I can’t say I’m desperate to feel that sort of pain just yet!
