I know exactly what you mean - switching to a fuelling head from a fat-burning head is really hard. But it does need practice in training, so good work today, well done :)

Hann from your experience can you take on too many carbs in 1 go?
Heard about taking 2 gels before the swim start?
I was thinking of a gel at start one getting out as I trot to bike then sports drink as I exit t1
Then similar after bike taking gels in transition

But not sure if I will benefit

Just thinking it would be easier to take them when changing

I would definitely take them when changing!
And try and slip.in one extra while you can. You biggest enemy Px is under-fuelling, not over-fuelling! I would have a gel strapped to a bottle, pick up a fresh bottle every lap, that I then had to consume, depending on lap size. Usually a lap would take around 45 minutes. Some places it was only 30, so I would have a bottle every couple of laps, some were much longer. I would strap the gels to my top tube because on a MTB I didn't want to reach in my pocket and I,d forget.

I used masking tape and would write on them when to take them! So say 5 gels marked 1, 1.45, 2.30 etc having started at 12 for a 12 hr race... I would be carbed up to the nines at the start...
Masking tape you can just rip off easily and you can write on it with a sharpie...

Then in your head divide the while event into smaller chunks. I psychologically used the disappearing gels as a tool to.measure progress.
