I've posted ad infinitum about chest straps *for me* giving nuts results, attributed to static in my t-shirts. I've validated this by running topless (not recommended for passers-by) which has then caused the results to revert to " normal". The only device I've had that has given reliable, 100% of the time, results has been an optical arm band.

All that said, I'm presuming Chris' friend has identified this run as particularly anomalous because they are aware of what their normal profile would be. Without the graph though it's difficult to see whether this is just a HR strap showing a constant reading of (e.g.) 200 (i.e. an obvious technical glitch), or something more nuanced which might indicate something.

100% in zone 5 looks very odd though; even if there was something awry with his heart, surely it would at least start with some z1/z2/z3 periods, rather than leaping straight into a chest bursting level of HR.

Is this the activity Chrisull ?

strava.com

Elevation and HR seem to match that graph and the activity duration seemed to match up too. Looks like his "normal" HR for an easy run is in the 150s so maybe zones aren't that well set up. Though his HR doesn't seem to come down on the descents much (that might be just due to the terrain he was descending though). Or maybe my guesses are wrong :-)

No - that's not the one. Not sure he's on strava weirdly enough, or certainly not sharing stats with friends if he is.

Darn, thought my stalking was good enough :-)

Presume your friend is on this list though?

Looks rubbish data to me Chrisull. I don't get into zone 5 for much of a hm. Here is my breakdown for the Sheffield half, basically up a stinking great hill and back down again.

Might be as said earlier tgst his HR Zones are set wrongly and his Max HR is considerably higher than Garmin is holding for him.

Ta - thanks, lots of things to recommend, such as starting with a max HR test!

Cheers Fetch, really really like that. Love the ease of seeing pace at each band over the 12 months. Also very easy to see that even though I tell myself I want to take it easy on easy runs, I tend to still go too quick!

Appealing for a bit of advice so I don't waste more money on chest straps.

I'm using a Garmin 735XT watch, mostly for cycling, rowing and cross-training at the mo, but with the plan to add more running in as my rehab progresses. No intention of swimming any time soon.

Until late last year I was still using the old Garmin hard strap that I got with my original watch back in 2009. It's a miracle it's lasted this long, but it did.

December I decided it needed replacing before the rubber perished and the strap wouldn't connect any more.

I looked at the newer garmin straps and at the alternatives on Amazon which are a fair bit cheaper. Eventually settled on a "coospo" strap which arrived, worked fine, did the job without any issues.

Last week it died. It just stopped working. I've swapped batteries and it's not helped. It connects to the watch (or the monitor on the rower) but doesn't register any HR data at all.

I'm very reluctant to muck about trying buying a new strap for it to see if that cures the problem as it only cost £20 or so to begin with.

In anyone's experience how much better is the Garmin Dual (£41 from Wiggle) compared to these no-brand knock-offs on Amazon (anything from £22 at the mo)?

Is it worth spending a bit more for the Garmin brand? I'm tempted given that the Garmin hard strap I have has lasted so well but as with everyone right now the budget is tight and I'm averse to wasting pennies.

Thanks for your expertise folks.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
