I'm with Stuart on the 5k test.
Test 3 is nuts, lol.

Stuart, and that is all it is, an estimate, but a good estimate in my opinion. I appreciate what you are saying though, and I think that would also work. Many come into Hadd without actually taking a test like these and end up underperforming because they have started on the wrong HR banding.
Having said all that I take on board what a lot of 'experts' like Maffetone say, that Max HR is unreliable, it can be affected by weather, illness, hydration status, etc. For me, I've always found it to be extremely reliable with all other externals being equal.

Totally agree boab, getting a valid number within a few bpm is the key thing for any hr training, all of those methods will get a "good enough" value, just with slightly different levels of unpleasantness!

I done a recent 5k and see 195! I have set mine at 198 which is what I have seen earlier in the year (where I pushed the last mile in a hilly 20 mile race). Although the recent 5k was a hard effort I wasn't nearly sick!! Had 195 in a 10k as well a few weeks before that.
Did read somewhere that 5k max + 4-5 beats is probably max. Not sure how true that is?
I do need to really try Hadd for a proper amount of time. I dont convert at all well from 5k/10k to Half/Mara (I do low mileage). Done 8 weeks of running at 8:45 pace last year after injury (but still didn't get HR to be under 75%) then reverted to other training as had London Marathon.
I need more patience with it!!

Yeah Daz, you need a huge doze of patience. Took me nearly 9 months to get some seriously good results from it. Worth it though

So going back a page or so the entry level is to get to 50+ mpw at an average pace less than 5k pace plus three minutes and HR less than 75% WHR?

Thanks for the tips.
I'm relatively happy with my Max HR. I've seen 164 and 165bpm quite a few times at the end of a hard finish at parkrun, so am using the 165 as max unless I see higher in the next month.
If anything I think there's maybe a beat or 2 more in me so wherever the 70/75/80% calcs show a decimal I'm rounding up!
Hope DavieC hasn't given up on the thread, it's been lively since he said he thought he was talking to himself!

Fenners - Thats how I read it. I struggled to get HR under 75% max with 5k + 3mm. As said didnt give enough time.

Fenners yes, the idea is to get big miles in at an "easy" pace. You might struggle to run normally at 75%max when you start, so don't go slower than 5k+3'.
Over time 75%max will be quicker than 5k+3', so use 75%max, then as that becomes easier/faster, drop a few runs down to the 70%max level (and you will thank yourself for those when you're doing one or two subLTs per week).
