HG, my other half works away all week, so nearly all of my gig going is solitary. We only really share a handful of band likes anyway, so when one comes up that we both like, we make a real effort to go together.

Other than that, I've always really enjoyed the gigs I've gone to solo and have actually picked up Facebook friends from all over the world based on chat/banter during a gig.

Well over the last year I've seen;

Self Esteem
Monochrome Set
Idles
Superorganism
Public Service Broadcasting
Tracey Ann and Danny
Thom York solo show
Arcade Fire

Living half way between London and Brighton, give me a great selection of gigs to go to.

Some of the gigs I went by myself, just seems easier as I not have to be "worried" if anyone else is enjoying the show.
If anyone is aware of Meet Up, there are groups on there for people who like to go to gigs. I'm in a group in Brighton and London. Generally a few of us meet at a pub pre show, go to the gig, and then maybe a pub after. Makes it a good night. I'm actually hosting a meet up to see Leila Moss in Brighton in a couple of weeks time.
I'm in a Public Service Broadcasting Facebook group, and someone there arranged a pub meet before the show at the Royal Albert Hall.

Some tickets are getting ridiculously expensive especially for those in big venues.

I certainly didn't begrudge paying over £100 for Kate Bush at Hammersmith a few years ago. Can't think of many other artists I would pay that amount. Possibly if 'Springsteen on Broadway' came to the West End.

As I keep going on about (at great length), my wife had big problems with sound due to her balance issues. It's largely put her off popular beat combos, so I see most on my own. We even once went to see a Spanish guitarist, Juan Martin. But even he had a pick-up on his acoustic guitar and the reverberations sent her out of the hall.

Actually, Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields has similar hearing/balance issues so most of their gigs are unplugged for his benefit. He shields his ears as well, when the audience applaud.

Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)
Crikey, that must be a major obstacle for a performing musician.

Hi OM *waves* ! And thanks for suggestions of meet up apps. I think I'd probably just go with banter at venue, as I'm not really very good just "in the pub".

PSB come to mind when I'm listening to some of the electronica in Chvrches. While ticket price is great, it's a weekend we're meant to be going away to see my sister and her new born. Dilemmas, dilemmas! :-) G

I paid £90 to see U2 many years ago in Rotherham, but i will never pay that sort of money again to see a band.

I have recently paid just over £40 with booking fees etc to see the Manics. They are my favourite all time band (seen them 16 times so far) but i had to think about whether i was prepared to pay that much for a ticket.
I have been to plenty of gigs on my own. Normally the more obscure punk/new wave bands that the wife and kids have never heard of. Although i enjoy company at gigs, not having my beer intake counted is a good enough reason to go to a gig solo

The Manics are doing This Is My Truth in full aren't they? That'll be worth going to. My eldest went to see them in Cardiff doing Everything Must Go in full.

Paid £65 to see Iron Maiden at the NEC this year to sit in the cheap seats, it was worth every penny for the show they put on. I doubt I’d pay that much to see them again though, or any other band for that matter. I’m either reverting to my teenage years, or becoming a venue snob, I don’t like the big arenas anymore. Give me a small, dark, dirty venue where you’re up close to the band any day.

I forgot to mention Ferocious Dog, the support band from Monday. Celtic/folk/punk band, lively, bouncy, fun, very tight live act, very political. We’re going to see them again ASAP.
Going to see Deep South rock at the end of December in Cardiff. Florence Black from Merthyr Tydfil supported by Buffalo Summer from Swansea. Deep South Wales innit.

Ferocious Dog are brilliant!! Have seen them quite a few times now. Bumped into the lead singer at Watford Gap services last weekend. You can't miss him really ;)

I've never considered going to a gig solo before. But am thinking of going to see Oh My God! Its The Church as no one wants to go with me.
