Found what I need. There's a data field called "Elapsed time" which continues to run even when the watch is stopped which would allow me to keep an eye on the time to the next interval.

Not perfect, but better than nothing.

I think chunkywizard covered this many pages back and found there's no difference. It doesn't care if you stood still or walked or bounced around, rest and recovery seem the same. [Similarly, to my brain 'rest' is standing still, 'recovery' might imply some movement]

I think Garmin agree but they aren't doing anything to exclude the data (and I agree with it really but get Larkim's issue with pausing). From their point of view, they give you easy analysis of the main portion of the session via their app anyway.

If all I used was GC then I'd probably be happy with using rest. But when it comes across to here it offends my data sensibilities.

Though I've had it pointed out to me that for some tools, such as runalyze, the near-stationary period with recovering heart rate is more useful for analysis and prediction purposes.

Elapsed time can be very useful for many things. It's handy for long ultras where you may want to stop the gps in checkpoints to save battery and stop the trace wandering all over and putting the distance tracking out, but still easily track your elapsed time since the start rather than just when the watch was active.

Ah, yes. And it continues in the background even if you choose the "resume later" option or whatever it's called.

I have elapsed time as my standard screen although for my purposes timer would work well enough.

That's how I use it in CPs if it's a significant stop.

A really pedantic point, relating to a question I don’t know the answer to.

For elapsed time, does the device actually ‘continue in the background’? Or does it record when the activity started and so when it’s restarted, can work out the elapsed time? I’d presume the latter.

Depends what you mean by "continue in the background"? Not sure this is relevant to elapsed time, which is just the interval since the activity started.
